Recently, Lextar Electronics Corp., a LED-chip manufacturing subsidiary of Taiwan's largest TFT-LCD panel maker AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), won order from Samsung of South Korea for LCD TV-panel backlights. Carmanah Technologies Corporation,Canadian solar LED technology innovator Carmanah Technologies Corporation has entered into a distribution agreement with the Jardine Engineering Corporation (JEC), a member of Hong Kong-based Jardine Matheson Group. Veeco Instruments Inc. announced that it has been awarded $4 million in R&D matching funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act by the U.S. Department of Energy to support high-efficiency solid state lighting projects. The company WhiteOptics LLC in Newark has received $1.5 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop new technology: a highly reflective material that will improve efficiency, lifetime and cost for LED light fixtures. This funding will create and-or save approximately five jobs immediately and has the potential to create 100 direct manufacturing jobs and hundreds of downstream installation-related jobs, depending on  the degree of commercialization success.

ilumisys, Inc., developer and producer of next-generation solid-state lighting technology, today received a $4 million tax credit to expand research and development of LED lighting technology and ramp-up manufacturing operations in Michigan from the Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) based on a recommendation from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
