Samsung, the Korean electronic giant, is reportedly to be in talks with Sony to supply LED-backlit panels for TVs, according to an article on the Seoul Economic Daily, a Korean-language newspaper. Samsung may supply LED panels measuring 40 inches, 46 inches and 55 inches for Sony’s LED TVs, while it currently has no plan to supply LED-related chips to any of its competitors, according to the report.

Taiwan’s leading panel vendor AU Optronics plans to fully-adopt LED backlight for all NB panels shipped before the end of 2010; penetration of LED backlight in its internal monitor shipments is expected to reach 10 ~ 15%. In 2010, the estimated global LED TV penetration may hit 10%. Dr L.J. Chen, CEO of AUO, indicated that as a result of strong demand for LED panels, tighter supply of LED chips is expected in 2010.

Samsung has recently released the LED based SyncMaster XL2370 monitor in Korea. It's a 23” monitor with a Full HD resolution, Samsung’s TOC or Touch Of Color, a stunning 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 2ms response time. The Samsung XL2370 is Samsung’s highest performance display and the first to incorporate LED technology, giving the model a super-slim profile and significant energy-saving benefits.

Since power supply companies ventured into the LED field, vendors have been optimistic about the outlook for market demand in 3Q09, according to industry sources. Lite-On Tech. (2301.tw) Chairman Song Kung-Yuan said that orders have been increasing quarter after quarter, and compared to the relatively low profit base in 1Q09, 2Q09 profit appeared to have “grown exponentially.”

Wavien, Inc. today announces that its patented Premien LED projector technology produces output in excess of 200 lumens using a single white, 50 W LED. The output efficiency of Premien technology, which is currently available for portable projector applications, is up to two times higher than the competing LED technologies. LSI Industries Inc. (Nasdaq:LYTS) Wednesday announced it has completed the acquisition of AdL Technology and related companies (AdL Engineering and Kelmilfeen), privately owned and based in Columbus, Ohio. Since the first light bulb was invented in the 1800’s new lamp technology has evolved. When the fluorescent tube was invented in 1929, sales of traditional light bulbs plummeted, and then in the 1970’s along came the compact fluorescent, since then new variations have evolved, sales of the former types have virtually disappeared, but the fundamental lamp design has remained unchanged, using a heating element to ignite gases and produce light. The use of a heating element results in energy being wasted as heat as opposed to generating light.
