Canada Amends Light Bulbs Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards

The Canadian government has recently made amendments to minimum energy efficiency for 40W, 60W, 75W and 100W bulbs, according to a WTO custom and tariff website managed by the Chinese government. The new amendment will also allow the commercialization of a halogen lamp that was previously banned under the 2008 regulations. The halogen lamp is already being sold in U.S. Compared to 75W and 100W incandescent bulb phase out effective date of Jan. 1, 2014, the 40W and 60W bulb phase out dates will be Dec. 31, 2014.

The amendment will meet the U.S. standard for incandescent bulbs, and modified spectrum incandescent bulbs in Canada, since they display a specific color. The U.S. regulation requires standard spectrum incandescent bulbs with a luminous flux between 310 lumens to 749 lumens to use less than 29W of energy; bulbs with a luminous flux between 750 lumens and 1,049 lumens must be below 53W, with phase out effective date scheduled on Jan.1, 2013. Moreover, incandescent bulbs with luminous flux between 1,490 lumens to 2,600 cannot use more than 72W of energy and to be effective as of Jan. 1, 2012.
