Users are expecting the new watch would have eye-catching specs. According to MacWorld, the Watch 3 will be once again manufactured by Taiwan’s Quanta, which has made all the other Apple Watch series.
The Apple Watch 3 is rumored to be released in September 2017, just like the previous Apple Watch Series 2. The coming new device is said to have a Micro LED screen to help prolong battery life, which has been the main challenge for Apple. The new Micro LED panels are thinner and lighter, and do not require backlighting like the existing LCD panels, but at the same time provide better brightness and higher resolutions.
Given that Apple acquired LuxVue Technology, a specialist in Micro LED screen technologies, back in May 2014, it is highly expected that Apple may now add the new displays to its Watch 3.
According to LEDinside, Micro LED has become a lifesaver for the industry due to that improving demand could ease oversupply of LED chips. There are two important trends in Micro LED technology. The first one is large sized LED displays or billboards. Japan’s Sony already caught the world’s attention by showcasing its CLEDIS display technology at CES 2017, and also in other Display and AV exhibitions.
Another trend is Micro LED displays for small sized wearable devices which require more advanced technologies compare to large sized applications. Among them, Micro LED displays for smartwatches may be the first step for manufacturers because of the relatively small screens.
For companies, the ultimate goal is to expand the use of Micro LEDs on all smartphones and TVs but it would take at least 3 to 5 years to achieve, as LEDinside estimates.
