The head of Samsung Visual Display expressed that Samsung Electronics has been researching methods to apply quantum dot technologies to its Micro LED TV.

At the launch event for QLED TV of 2018 in Seoul, Jong-Hee Han, the executive vice president of Samsung Visual Display Business said, "We are planning to produce and supply Micro LED TVs from Vietnam."

Samsung confirmed that a 146-inch Micro LED TV model will be debuted, while Han explained the maximum and minimum sizes of the TVs are not finalized yet.

Han said that Samsung will announce prices of those models in June. The firm will take its 110-inch UHD TV price (USD 149,990) as a reference when deciding the price for the 146-inch Micro LED TV.

The vice president of Visual Display Business explained, when applying quantum dot technology to Micro LED TVs, the firm must use a very high level technology to put QD onto micron-scale LEDs. It needs different materials for the epitaxial growths of red, green, and blue Micro LEDs. Samsung is likely to save costs if QD technology can be used to improve productivity.

Rumor has it that Samsung will launch an OLED TV, but Han denied that. However, Han pointed out that the firm has an internal research project that plans to combine the QLED and OLED technology.

Besides, in 2H18, Samsung will launch "the Wall", a Micro LED TV which drew a lot of attention at CES 2018.

A Micro LED TV is made with a display that consists of many micron-scale LEDs. Similar to OLED TVs, Micro LED TVs do not need backlights. But unlike OLED, Micro LED uses inorganic materials.

LG Electronics is Samsung's competitor in the high-end TV segment. LG is known to use OLED technology in its high-end TVs.

The number of Micro LED patent filings have doubled in 2017 from global firms and South Korean companies.
