The market for connected LED or “smart” light bulbs is in its embryonic stage of development, with shipments totaling fewer than 2.5 million units in 2013. Samsung has finally officially announced its intent of ending its international LED luminaire business. Its luminaire operations will only be running in domestic markets from now on. San’an Opto has also become an Epistar shareholder this week, but with a mere 3% stake in the company it can’t even acquire a seat at the board. Cost effective communication solutions are important for long range smart streetlight applications to make it acceptable to potential clients, said Gary Tsai, R&D Director, Institute for Information Industry (III) at LEDforum 2014 last Friday at Taipei, Taiwan.

Main players behind OLED TV, Samsung and LG might be giving up the costly technology in favor of more cost affordable quantum dot technology, according to a Reuters report.

The LED packaging industry’s value is anticipated to only rise an estimated 3.2% on-year in 2015, from this year's US$14.6 billion to US$15 billion, according to the latest “Global LED package Industry Report” released by LEDinside, a division of Taiwan based market intelligence firm TrendForce. “With growth in the LED package market slowing and competitive pressure coming from China, the LED industry will face some major challenges next year,” said Roger Chu, research director at LEDinside.

Royal Philips, the global leader in lighting, and Lexus, a premium automotive brand, unveiled the first Lexus car showroom in Russia outfitted with a unique and connected ambient lighting system that combines LEDs with textile and  dynamic content. The Lexus-Rublevskiy showroom in Moscow has been renovated for the Russian premiere of the Toyota Lexus NX, with Philips luminous textiles creating a dynamic halo of light around the car to attract the attention of customers. In our everyday lives, we encounter outdoor displays in a variety of different forms. Osram Opto Semiconductors is now launching the first LED with oval light-radiating characteristics for large-screen video walls or digital road signs: the new surface-mountable Displix Oval. Thanks to a compact housing measuring just 2.1 x 2.7 x 1.5 mm, almost twice as many LEDs can now be mounted on a board than with ordinary radial diodes, doubling both the pixel density and the resolution of displays. As a result, the images displayed are extremely vivid with a high color homogeneity.
