LUXEON Rebel PC Amber improved its phosphor converted amber hot/cold factor and light output. It’s not only available for automotive and specialty markets, but also for the illumination market. Hot/Cold factor has risen up12% at 80C. Lumens and lumens per watt (efficacy) performance exceed that of all other amber power LEDs.

According to LEDinside, the research division of Trendforce Corporation, the large-size LED backlight demand visibility is expected to extend into Q3. However, as TV sales conventionally enter the down cycle in Q1, the LED backlight orders reflect that the seasonality effect will occur in early  Q4. Therefore, whether the LED lighting in Q4 can prop up the market demand will become an important observation focus.

A nine-channel LED driver, which features an I2C bus interface and a constant current output drive capability of up to 50mA per channel, has been created by Toshiba Electronics Europe. The TB62779FNG LED driver offers output current accuracy between channels of ±3% and between ICs of ±6%. The Allegheny County Airport Authority chosen Appalachian Lighting Systems, Inc. ON Semiconductor introduces an offline LED driver that integrates power factor correction (PFC) and isolated step-down AC-DC power conversion in a single stage.It supplies for applications such as LED-based street, low bay, wall packs and architectural lighting. The NCL30001 offers a reduced component count, lower cost solution that supports higher overall system efficiency in LED power.

Lumex expands its TitanBrite line of high-power LED technology in 2-, 3- and 5W capacities, which will offer high intensity light of up to 58, 210 and 300 lumens respectively. Compared with similar high-power LEDs, the new TitanBrite products can provide up to a 30 percent improvement in heat dissipation performance and a 60 percent enhancement in ESD protection.

Maxim provides LED drivers with PWM intensity control for applications. Using the serial interface to send the LED driver a command to change the register bits for the corresponding LED，the intensity can be normally controlled. The number of bits ranges from 4 to 8bits, equals to 16 to 256 intensity levels. Other Maxim LED drivers are carried out by adjusting the amount of the constant current sinking through an open-drain LED port.

Samsung and LG intend to offer a wider range of LED TVs this year. According to Rohit Pandit, business head for home entertainment at LG Electronics in India, LG new range of TVs is now weighted 50-50 between LED and LCD units. Samsung India deputy managing director Ravinder Zutshi  also forecasts sales of 200,000-300,000 LED sets this year, compared to 40,000 in 2009.

The LED market is developing rapidly, with US$7 billion in 2009 rising up to US$10.7 billion in 2010 and is expected to reach US$20.4 billion in 2012. The application of LED backlights by LCD TV manufacturers increased from 0.01% at the end of 2008 to 10% in the second half of 2009. It is expected to reach 27% by the end of 2010. And the application of LED backlights by LCD display producers grew from 0.01% at the end of 2008 to 5%.
