Sony will likely delay the launch of its new ultrathin organic light emitting diode (OLED) television, according to a report by Wall Street Journal. Once on track for the end of 2009, the larger Sony OLED TV is only slated to launch in 2010 at the earliest, because mass producing the new displays would exacerbate losses at its TV division. Its losses are blamed partly on decline in TV business due to sagging global economy.

The Pittsburgh International Airport has get an $800,000 grant to install LED lighting, a county executive Monday announced. Nearly 1,500 LED Lights will be installed in parking lots, and garages in the airport. The lights that will be replaced are in the long-term and extended parking lots as well as the three-level parking garage at the airport. The LED lighting system will consume an estimated 83 percent less energy and result in $158,754 in annual energy savings, with 2,118,438 kWh saved over the project's lifetime.

The city of Philadelphia plans to replace 55,000 incandescent traffic signals with LEDs in two years, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer, citing city officials. According to the article, the plan is to switch all the yellow and green traffic lights at the 2,800 intersections in the city to energy-efficient LEDs, as the red lights were already switched to LEDs about 10 years ago. The city would use federal stimulus money and state-required energy conservation encouraging subsidies to accomplish the project, city officials said.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey recently announced that it has completed installing energy-efficient LED lighting on the iconic necklace of the George Washington Bridge. LSI Industries, under contract to the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and in coordination with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, developed and produced this innovative lighting system.

SRI International, an independent nonprofit research institute, and Showa Denko K.K. (SDK), a Japan-based chemical industry company in partnership with Itochu Plastics Inc. (CIPS), have achieved record-breaking results using SRI’s new cavity organic light-emitting diode (COLED) technology and SDK’s light-emitting polymers to produce a highly efficient light source that could one day replace incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs.

OSRAM has recently introduced its new Parathom Classic LED lamp. With an average service life of 25,000 hours, the new product requires just 8 Watts to achieve the same light output as incandescent lamps, i.e. 80 percent less energy. Mixing luminescence phosphor with silicone and dispensing it on a blue light emitting chip is a common LED package method in producing white light. Known as the SP-P140, this ultra compact LED projector from Samsung is able to support resolutions of up to SXGA (1,280 x 1,024). However, it can only display SVGA (800 x 600) resolution. Philips Wednesday announced that JB Lighting Lichtanlagen GmbH took a license under Philips’ LED Luminaires and Retrofit Bulbs license program. JB Lighting Lichtanlagen GmbH is a Germany-based supplier of theatrical & entertainment lighting. Through the license, JB Lighting obtains access to basic driver and control technologies for LED luminaires and retrofit bulbs.
