LED lighting Market to Take Off in 2009

Taiwan LED lighting makers estimate LED market to take off in 2009 in spite of the ongoing financial crisis. In Taiwan, several significant LED lighting projects have launched by governments. The Taichung City government installed 5,000 streetlights by the end of October, the largest number of all. The Bureau of Energy under the Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced it will budget NT$150 million (US$4.5 million at US$1:NT$33) in 2009 to finance local governments on the island to erect a total number of 12,500 LED streetlights islandwide.

Worldwide OLED Revenues Up 60% in Q308, But Still Face Price Competition from LCDs

The worldwide OLED display revenue in Q308 was US$141 million, down 11% quarter by quarter, but up 60% year by year, according to market sources. Chi Mei EL, the second supplier of AMOLED displays, posted record high shipments in Q308, while the leading AMOLED supplier Samsung SDI experienced lower shipments quarter by quarter. As a result, AMOLED shipments increased only slightly compared to Q208 reaching 1.7 million units.

Houston gives green light for LED traffic bulbs

It’s reported that Houston plans to replace the light bulbs at all 2,381 of its traffic stops with LED bulbs that could save more than $4 million a year in electricity costs. The LED traffic signals will cost 16 times more than incandescent bulbs and last six years longer. City Council approve a $16.4 million contract for pricier signals with Siemens Building Technologies Inc.
