LED Bulbs Number to Celebrate New Year's Eve in Times Square

As New Year is drawing near, a key number in the countdown has arrived in Times Square on Wednesday.

There are 526 advanced LED bulbs consist of the seven-foot-tall number "2" sign. And the number will be swapped out for one of the "1" signs from last year to make 2012.

Organizers say the display shows the end of the era of Edison, and the beginning of a more efficient future. As Peter Soares of Phillips Lighting, said "It's an icon for New York, right? But more importantly, it's representation of the future, the lighting future."

"Back in 1907, the very first New Year's Eve ball had 125-watt incandescent bulbs, that was super-high tech in 1907. This is the next step forward using new LED technology," said Tim Tompkins of the Times Square Alliance.

The giant number will be on display at the Times Square Visitor Center until Tuesday, when it will be prepped for its big moment.
