Lighting Japan 2013 snapshot – OLED lighting and design lighting raises eyebrows

Lighting Japan has its fifth exhibition kicks off in Tokyo, Japan, featuring a wide range of next-generation lighting applications into series of themes as shown in LED/OLED organic electro-luminescence (EL) segment and the first Design Lighting Tokyo. The exhibition not only demonstrates innovative technology but also incorporates views about the latest trends. The exhibition is board in terms of scale. For specialized areas such as lighting, it covers three key exhibitions including the 5th LED/OLED Lighting Technology Expo, the 3rd LED/OLED Light Expo and the 1st Design Lighting Tokyo 2013.


According to show management company Reed Japan, the number of exhibitors has grown by 10% YoY at 410. The three-day exhibition is hold from January 16 to 18. It covers every sector in the LED supply chain from equipment, material, epi-wafer, packaging and testing, module to finished applications. Vendors from the lighting design area are invited to the show for the first time but most are local based. Only one Taiwanese player in such area is found as it being the only one who passed the application.


Exhibitors from all over the globe have their presence at the show. Of the Japanese exhibitors, big names including Panasonic and Toshiba have no absence. Among all Korean companies, nPora has drawn much spotlight. In addition to the specialized exhibition section for Taiwanese vendors, players including Genesis Photonics, Everlight and Optotech all host big individual booths at the show. Apart from the Taiwan section, specialized sections for China and Korea are also designed.

Leaders in the lighting design area have joined the opening ceremony with first-tier Japanese vendors, highlighting the rising role of the former group. It is expected that more lighting design related vendors will be attracted to exhibit in ongoing shows. Thus, future shows should serve as a reference platform for all information exchange in regards to LED lighting and corresponding trends.


In contrast the showcase of engineering or concept items, more OLED vendors have joined with actual OLED products showcased, backed by the growing maturity on technology front. Based on the ramping up shipment amount of OLED lighting products, LEDinside is confident about future prospect. The considerable price gap between OLED and LED lighting applications is not a concern as these two segment is believed to distinct from each other by ASP, the research firm stated.

Lighting Japan has its theme builds on technology, design and lighting applications. With this clear theme set, the show is unique from others as cutting-edge real applications can be found there. Lighting Japan has a global reach as thoughts about the latest trends about technology and industry are shared among experts and industry players worldwide. Where for the LightFair scheduled in March, it will be more domestic market oriented with local distributors as the key audience. 

Looking forward into 2014, Lighting Japan is expected to expand its scale into the east wing of Tokyo Big Sight. Where automobile-related exhibitions will relocate to the west wing instead.
