The international photonics exhibition Photonics West 2018 is now the largest one in the US and has a lot of visitors. Taking place annually in San Francisco, Photonics West 2018 is the world's largest event for the optoelectronics industry. HPL is one of the well-known manufacturers of UV LED and IR LED. It has sufficient experiences in cooperating with chip manufacturers, developing packaging products and designing optical system. By combining the above three main advantages, it develops UV and IR packaging products. The UV products have been applied in the curing market. The irradiance can reach 8W/cm2 at a distance of 10cm. IR LED products have also been shipped to NB and applied in the facial recognition market. At Photonics West 2018, LEDinside had the pleasure to interview HPL’s President Charles Wei for sharing HPL’s current UV-C LED technology and the market development trend.

Bioraytron is the joint venture company between Epileds and HPL. The joint company will enable vertical integration of DUV LED applications, starting from epitaxy to LED chip manufacturing while focusing on the sales of UV-B LED and UV-C LED packages and modules. The President Charles Wei indicated that end applications suppliers have viewed UV-C LEDs as value added products; thus, a variety of static water and air purifiers have rolled out in the market since 2017. The static water purifier market includes storing water sterilization and portable water sterilization. In addition, in terms of the static water purifier market, 1-3mW UV-C LED products are adopted to achieve sterilization, boosting the market demand of UV-C LED products rapidly. Due to the decrease in product prices in 2018, it can stimulate more market demands and products. The portable water sterilization market, vacuum flask manufacturers for example, showed interest in the combination of UV-C LED products. With Bioraytron’s 10mW UV-C LED product, the sterilization efficiency can reach 99.999% under 90 seconds. Besides, for air purification market, Bioraytron provides packaging products for clients. In a confined space, the general sterilization efficiency can reach around 70-80%.

Meanwhile, in terms of sterilization of lotic system market, with its half-year effort, HPL has earned a lot of achievements. Bioraytron can supply around 40-60mW four-chip package product for the water speed of 1.3-3 liters per minute.

Wei expressed that Bioraytron’s UV-C LED products have been successfully applied on the consumer industries including household appliances, food processing, sanitary ware, kitchen ware, 3C and health industry. At the same time, they have entered home water purifier, medical sterilization and high-tech water purifier industry. The 10-20mW product has achieved mass production. The 20-40mW product samples are submitted to clients. The company’s monthly capacity for UV LED products in 1H18 is 200 thousand and will reach 500 thousand in 2H18. The monthly capacity in 2019 is expected to be 1 million.

LEDinside Viewpoint: Static water sterilization and surface sterilization (air purifier and household appliance) don’t require much for time. The requirement of product’s price–performance ratio is quite high. In 2018, it is expected to reach under USD 1/mW. In addition, sterilization of lotic system requires fast purifying time; therefore, the market has higher requirement in product’s power. The LED specifications should be higher than 50mW or even 100mW, and it doesn’t require much for product’s price. In 2018-2020, water and air sterilization market will boost the growth of the UV-C LED market.
