Mitsubishi Electric Supplies Terminal Doppler Lidar to Improve Flight Traffic Safety at Nice Airport

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has announced that the company will supply a Terminal Doppler Lidar system (DIABREZZATM A Series) to Côte d'Azur Airport in Nice, France with the cooperation of the French national meteorological service, Météo-France.

The integration radar and lidar helps to detect wind shear around the airports to maximize prevention of aircraft accidents. A Terminal Doppler Lidar transmits laser beams and then detects light backscattered by dust and other particles in the air, which enables the system to measure line-of-sight wind speed using the Doppler frequency shift of the backscattered light. Mitsubishi Electric has developed a planar waveguide amplifier that extends the line-of-sight wind speed observation range to more than 20km and complies with Standards and Recommended Practices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), an organization ensuring that civil aviation operations and regulations conform to international norms.

The company has provided its Terminal Doppler Lidar systems to airports in Japan and Hong Kong since 2015. This year, it will deliver another two systems to airports in China and Turkey. With its supply to Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, the system of Mitsubishi Electric will first operate in Europe. The company expects to expand its weather radar and lidar business, including Terminal Doppler Lidar, in global markets. The business is expected to achieve sales of 2.5 billion yen (US$ 22.23 million) by March 2021.
