LEDinside was honored to invite Dr. Jae-Hyun Kim, head of the Department of Applied Nano Mechanics at the Korean Institute of Machinery and materials (KIMM) to join Micro LEDforum 2018 to introduce their advanced technology of Micro LED production. Dr. Kim and his team developed the roll-to-plate transfer method to efficiently transfer Micro LEDs and to speed up the production of Micro LED displays.
The “roll transfer process” was introduced by Dr. Kim and his research team in 2017. The world first roll-based transfer technology can transfer nanoscale objects from a donor substrate to a target substrate with high yields and productivity. During the presentation at Micro LEDforum 2018, Dr. Kim explained how Mini LED and Micro LED dies can be transferred via Roll-to-Plate technology to expedite Mini and Micro LED display manufacturing process.
(Dr. Jae-Hyun Kim, Head of Nano-Mechanics Department, KIMM)
On one Micro LED TV, there might be more than 25 million Micro LED dies. Conventional pick-and-place methods with die-bonder can only process limited amount of chips at a time and therefore it will take more than a month to produce a Micro LED TV. The roll transfer technology, on the other hand, is able to transfer more than 10,000 Micro LEDs per second and to accelerate the process while saving cost.
The rolling method enables simultaneous transfer and interconnection of LEDs and the target substrate with mechanical deformation. Dr. Kim also pointed out that the uniformity of LEDs could be controlled over lines with the roll transfer process.
With the technology, Dr. Kim suggested to target applications which can only be achieved by Micro LED such as automotive application that turns widows of vehicles into displays. This kind of application requires high transparency and resistance to heat and UV, an advantage which Micro LED has over LCD and OLED.
To collect and share more insights of Micro LED technologies, LEDinside is currently hosting the 2018 Micro LED Technology Research Contest and would like to invite companies, academic institutions and other corporate entities to submit abstracts or outlines of their latest technical papers related to innovative Micro LED technologies.
