Airport in India and Port in the U.S. to be Installed with LED Lighting

A U.S. based LED luminaires and wireless lighting controls supplier, Bright Light System (BLS) has reported its completion of the first phase transition to LED lighting with its system software for Port Freeport in Texas, USA. Meanwhile, in India, Kempegowda International Airport, the third busiest airport of the country, has announced to build a second runway powered by LED lighting.

Port Freeport has begun a project to update the lighting system at the port with the lighting solutions provided by BLS. The company has finished phase one of the project, which involved replacing the high pressure sodium lights in the Inner Harbor area with LED lighting. The next phase will continue the replacement in the Velasco Terminal and is scheduled to begin in October.

About 400 LED lights with integrated wireless sensors will be installed once the project is completed, enabling Port Freeport to take advantage of the Bright Light Management System to monitor and control the lighting while managing and analyzing data and information. The LED lights will also provide advanced illuminance levels in the terminal with long operating lifetime and lower energy consumption.

Paul Kresta, Commission Chairman of Port Freeport, said, “The LED lighting retrofit project from Bright Light Systems supports our mission of growth and innovation for Port Freeport. The improved energy savings and reduction in light dispersion to the surrounding community demonstrates our dedication to providing a safer, more efficient environment for our customers and citizens.”

Kempegowda International Airport, which serves Bangalore, India’s Silicon Valley, and the neighboring areas, is currently constructing its second runway which will be powered by ADB SAFEGATE’s SafeLED airfield lighting (AGL). Once it starts operating by late 2019, it will become India’s first airport runway lit by LED lighting.

Airport lighting solution provider ADB SAFEGATE was responsible for designing and supplying the AGL and Advanced Visual Docking Guidance Systems (A-VDGS). The company will provide its SafeLED lights, constant current regulators (CCRs) for power management, cables, lighting and control systems such as the ALCMS and ILCMS. The company’s Safedock T1 and T2 variants of A-VDGS will be integrated with the airport’s existing apron management system for improved performance at the gate. The SafeLED AGL range offers the advantages of lower maintenance and power costs, while ensuring higher levels of safety, availability and efficient operations.

“As the BLR Airport gears up to support 55 air traffic movements per hour on its second runway, ensuring safe and efficient operations will remain paramount. With our focus on safety and efficiency of flight operation, there is no room for error. We believe that ADB SAFEGATE’s LED airfield lights will bring us the advantages of performance, cost and energy gains, ease of operation and maintenance, and overall safety and efficiency,” said Tom Shimmin, Chief Project Officer, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the operator of the BLR Airport.

The new runway will have an advanced CAT-III (B) instrument landing system for accommodating all types of aircraft and is expected to operate by October 2019.
