The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has just released the second draft of ENERGY STAR performance criteria for three SSL luminaire categories: outdoor pole-mounted area and roadway luminaires, outdoor wall-mounted area luminaires, and parking garage/canopy luminaires.
The Proposed Category “A” (near-term applications) additions to the Outdoor Area & Parking Garage area include the below:
Minimum Light Output
Luminaire shall deliver a minimum of 1,000 lumens (initial).
Minimum Fitted Target Efficacy (lm/W)
Fitted Target Efficacy (FTE) evaluates the efficacy with which a luminaire delivers uniform illumination to a rectangular uniform area of coverage (the target area). FTE is calculated using standard absolute luminaire photometry (LM-79-08 test results in LM-63-02 formatted .ies file). Minimum requirements are given in initial lumens per watt of luminaire input power (lm/W). For DOE FTE calculator (beta version) please see http://www.drintl.com/temp/FTE-Calculator.exe. For calculator instructions, please see http://www.drintl.com/htmlemail/FTE_ReadMe.pdf. For supporting materials, please see http://www.drintl.com/htmlemail/FTEoverview01Jul09.pdf and http://www.drintl.com/htmlemail/FTEalgorithm01Jul09.pdf.
Shielded (< 1.5 MH house-side)
Low Output < 9,500 lumens 37
High Output ≥ 9,500 lumens 48
Unshielded (≥ 1.5 MH house-side)
Low Output < 13,300 lumens 53
High Output ≥ 13,300 lumens 70
Full information on second draft ENERGY STAR performance criteria
For outdoor pole-mounted area and roadway luminaires, application requirements are a minimum light output from the luminaire of 1,000 lumens (initial), and a minimum FTE that varies according to whether the luminaires are shielded or unshielded, high output or low.
Luminaire types in this application include but are not limited to luminaires intended for lighting streets, parking lots, walkways, and plazas, and also decorative post-top luminaires. This category excludes luminaires intended to be mounted below eye level, e.g., bollards and steplights.
For outdoor wall-mounted area luminaires (“wall packs”), application requirements for minimum light output are 300 lumens (initial), among other metrics.
For parking garage/canopy luminaires, application requirements for minimum light output is 2,000 lumens (initial), among other requirements.
DOE invites stakeholder review and comments regarding these second draft criteria by July 31, 2009.
