Plessey announced today that it has designed an integrated LED light and fixture solution, the Cidadão Powerlight, which provides an easy and cost effective retrofit for traditional, general lighting in homes across Brazil. The Cidadao Powerlight will be available in Brazil through Plessey's representative company LumenLEDs Sistemas.
A report* on cities participating in a global pilot program for LED lighting states that lighting is responsible for 19% of global electricity use and around 6% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Doubling lighting efficiency globally through LEDs would have a climate impact equivalent to eliminating half the emissions of all electricity and heat production in the EU.
The same report indicates that residents of pilot cities prefer LED lighting, citing the social and environmental benefits. LED lighting was also found to be a durable technology with the need for minimal repairs; the failure rate of LED products over 6,000 hours is around 1% compared, for example, to around 10% of conventional lighting over a similar time period. Combined with the low energy consumption and longer lifetime, the Cidadão Powerlight is a cost effective solution for replacing traditional lighting in both homes and commercial buildings.
Jeff Williams, Managing Director for LumenLEDs Sistemas, said: "In Brazil and most tropical and subtropical countries, ceilings are made from concrete, a standard construction technique for the floor above. A circular plastic access box is mounted in the concrete, flush to the ceiling, to allow connection to a light switch and the buildings electrical system. The Cidadão Powerlight is a simple surface mount solution designed to easily attach to any of the many types of recessed ceiling access boxes, requiring only two screws to secure it. We have been working on the concept with Plessey for a few months and we are very pleased with the outcome. We expect to move into volume production as we enter the holiday period in Brazil later this quarter."
Plessey's LED Sales Director, Giuliano Cassataro, added: "The Cidadao forms part of our strategy to build LED module solutions into the retrofit market. This particular solution has proved popular as it contributes to reduce the overall cost of retrofitting, eliminating the need to buy a separate fixture and considerably reducing the time spent fitting the light."
The Cidadão Powerlight solution can be used in all areas of general lighting and will be showcased at the Plessey stand during Europe's largest lighting show, LuxLive on 18th and 19th November 2015.
