TILS 2018: Taiwan Optoelectronic Semiconductor Industry Association

Taiwan Optoelectronic Semiconductor Industry Association (TOSIA) aims to agglomerate domestic consensus on the development of the optoelectronic semiconductor industry, to promote strategic collaboration among its members, and to advance and bring prosperity to the industry.  Meanwhile, it joins efforts with various major associations and industrial organizations, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute to develop an industrial development platform in order to provide effective technical and professional services, and to boost the overall competitive advantages of the optoelectronic semiconductor industry in Taiwan.

TOSIA proactively promotes the normal development of the domestic LED lighting industry to link with international market. For example, it joins in the efforts of the industry, government and academia in making the first common industrial standards " Smart Lighting System Standard" a reality in Taiwan and announced to be part of the CNS in 2013 to help the government establish the related standards in favor of connecting with the world. And also by means of demonstrative installations in public areas for education on and promotion of LED applications products, at the same time the verification of the LED illumination criteria to products. In addition, it promotes the first LED voluntary standard in Taiwan to include the LED easy-to-read label as part of the MIT Smile Symbol review guidelines so as to enhance the quality of LED light bulbs in Taiwan.

In terms of promoting domestic industries, the "Taiwan Intelligent LED Lighting Association" was established through joint promotion with the lighting association. The “Urim Award” is offered as an incentive for local design talents to ally with lighting businesses in developing innovative and fashionable lights as well as promoting cross-disciplinary integration and development of new applications in order for the LED industry to grow further. Through holding the Taiwan Solid State Lighting Conference, a symposium that has entered its 11th year, international discussions and exchanges are able to occur continuously; it helps expand the scope of cooperation with countries around the world, add to the technical momentum of Taiwanese manufacturers and innovate brand value. In order to help the industry innovate and transform, and to apply smart technologies, the” Smart Optoelectronic Semiconductor Sensor SIG” was established. The hope is to promote transformation of the optoelectronic semiconductor industry in Taiwan and improve the overall competitive advantages in innovative developments by developing the sensor technology as a whole.

In terms of connecting new markets and expanding exportation, it reinforces information exchange on industrial developments with the United States, Japan, Russia, and India and so on in order to create business cooperation opportunities and to expand the presence in the ASEAN market. It has sent delegations on an observational tour to the Philippines and Vietnam, for example. TOSIA participated in Photonics West 2016 to market the LED products from Taiwan. In the Taiwan Pavilion, the products on display included the Micro LED, LED HV Chip, LED creative lamps, among others.  In addition, linked to the government's New Southbound Policy that paves the road for business opportunities in the Southeast Asian markets, TOSIA established the " New South Bound Linkage of LED Lighting Industry SIG " to help its members expand their presence in emerging markets accordingly. The bridge connecting the lighting market in Vietnam was created in 2016 and 2017. The LED Lighting Letter of Intent was signed with the Vietnam Lighting Association (VLA) and the Vietnam certification center (QUACERT), respectively. In 2017, the Taiwan delegation also attended the “2017 Taiwan-Vietnam Industrial Collaboration Forum”, and the partnership between Taiwan and Vietnam in the LED industry was established accordingly.

TOSIA currently has four committees whose tasks and job responsibilities are as follows:

TOSIA has 23 members, including upstream, mid-stream and downstream public companies in Taiwan. Issues such as the Internet of Things and Smart City have driven the LED industry to upgrade and transform again. TOSIA will continue to join in the efforts of the industry, government, academia and research institutes to help the LED industry move toward the further diversify LED smart lighting integration systems to help the Taiwan LED industry march toward new milestones with smart innovation and to catch the limelight again.
