Arthur Hsu, PV Analyst from EnergyTrend: (PV) Innovative Concepts of Solar Technology Breakthrough

Arthur Hsu shared with the audiences his analysis of innovative concepts of solar technology breakthrough. Hsu believes that there are two ways to reduce carbon emissions: increasing energy utilization efficiency and changing energy utilization structure. To change energy utilization structure, it requires not only increasing the solar energy utilization rate but also improving utilization rate of end applications.

In Hsu’s thorough introduction of energy utilization status across different regions, especially that of Taiwan, he indicated that Taiwan heavily relies on energy import, mainly coal power and nuclear power and nuclear power will gradually replace coal power in the future.

As for the market, he expressed that the uncertainties about the Italian market no longer exist and the German and Italian markets will gradually recover in 2H11. The market price trend is expected to go upward.

Finally, Hsu also shared his prediction of BIPV outlook. As the number of green buildings increases, BIPV will also grow rapidly by 2013. It is expected that by 2015, global BIPV market will reach 1.6 GW, especially in the European markets. As the number of buildings increases, the Chinese and Japanese markets will be two vital focuses for BIPV.

Mitchell Huang, Associate Manager of J. J. Pan and Partners Architects and Planners: Prospects of Green Building Applications

With statistical charts and photos of global natural disasters, Mitchell Huang first illustrated how the global climate has been getting warmer to highlight the importance of green buildings’ development.

Huang then went on to explain a series of architectural techniques used to conserve energy. In terms of energy saving for buildings, there are floating ventilation, green roofing, shadowing, underground building, tunnel wind and water cooling air conditioner, etc..

Last, Huang shared with the audience a variety of green building projects. These green building projects include the chapel with green roofing across the road from National Taiwan University, MRT/DF112 train station without any air conditioner, and the cooperative project with the sponsor of this event, Delta Electronics.

He believes that architects should incorporate green building concepts into their designs, especially in the notion of building green cities. On the other hand, the solar energy utilization rate of green building applications is not high enough at this stage. If the efficiency improves, the solar application in green buildings will be much wider.

Dr. Mohan Narayanan, Vice President of Technology of Hanwha SolarOne (Photo Credit: LEDinside)

Dr. Mohan Narayanan, Vice President of Technology of Hanwha SolarOne: Prospects of Solar Technological Development in Green Building Applications

Dr. Mohan Narayanan indicated that PV products can be used in residential, commercial, and other particular types of buildings to reinforce green building concepts. As a renewable energy, PV can and will play a crucial role in green building development.

Narayanan also talked about different products’ needs and requirements for residential and commercial buildings, as well as localized market surveillance.

He mentioned that PV will play an important role in the future development of green buildings and concluded his session with an introduction of some BIPV projects.

Arthur Huang, Founder & Managing Director of Miniwiz: Opportunities for Built-In Energy System in Green Buildings

Arthur Huang, as an entrepreneur of technology innovation, explained how Miniwiz operates under the corporate theme of “green” and “sustainable.” Huang said that the green building has to be reconsidered in a wider horizon where the system integration should include as many elements as possible such as technology, marketing, and consumer education.

Huang indicated that constructing buildings accounts for 40% of global carbon emissions, thus the company sees green buildings as a main business focus. Effective reduction of carbon emissions from a building can be achieved through heat isolation, lighting and air conditioning.

Miniwiz mainly uses recycled plastic, wood, metal materials and further processes the collected materials for construction use. Miniwiz shreds recycled tree barks and combine with recycled plastics to form sturdy lighting fixtures, ceilings and furniture pieces.

Huang Xiaodong, Director of Solar PV & EMC Division, China Architecture Design & Research Group: The Market of BIPV and China’s National Subsidy Policy

Mr. Xiaodong Huang talked in detail about the change in China’s national renewable energy policies, development scales of BIPV projects, and changes in subsidies of BIPV with an in-depth forecast of national BIPV market.

He indicated that the overall BIPV policies did not have dramatic change from 2009 to 2011 but the subsidy amount has been decreasing. Nevertheless, domestic companies still put effort in applying for qualification which explains the government’s optimistic outlook for BIPV subsidy. On the other hand, severe competition between BIPV players in the Chinese market has driven down the overall PV market price.

In addition, because of the nuclear crisis caused by Japan’s recent devastating quake, the Chinese government has adjusted the development direction of power stations. Many originally approved nuclear power related projects have been put on hold indefinitely.

Duff Lu, EV & Battery Analyst from EnergyTrend(photo credit:LEDinside)

Duff Lu, EV & Battery Analyst from EnergyTrend: (EV/Battery) New Energy Storage System in Green Buildings

Duff Lu shared his analysis of energy storage system used in power generation, transmission and end user applications to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions through his in-depth presentation.

He stressed that demand for smart meter will remain high in the European markets in the next few years due to three primary factors: relatively higher electricity price, privatization of electricity companies, and relatively higher percentage of renewable energy utilization. Countries like France, England, and Germany will have stronger desire to utilize energy storage systems due to comparatively higher electricity price.

Additionally, he expects that smart meter will grow aggressively from 2011 to 2014 in regional markets such as England, Germany, China and Korea. Batteries used for household storage will start to show substantial growth from 2015 to 2017.

Roger Chu, Green Energy Division Research Director (LEDinside & EnergyTrend ) from TrendForce(photo credit:LEDinside)

Roger Chu, Green Energy Division Research Director (LEDinside & EnergyTrend) from TrendForce: Development Trend of Emerging Lighting Industry in the New Era

Chu started the LED session with a series of the latest statistical industry information, attracting many participants from both the LED and solar industries. He expected the global market of lighting fixtures to be 79.3 billion dollars in 2010.

He shared research information on the market analysis of indoor lighting, commercial space lighting and outdoor lighting. For indoor lighting, people tend to place more importance on the light quality. As the electricity price goes up, evidenced by an 25% increase in Beijing and Tianjin, enterprises are now more motivated to replace traditional light bulbs, leading to a demand increase for LED light tubes. In addition, according to his research team, China installed the most LED street lighting in the year of 2010.

Chu also commented on the Japanese LED market status. He claimed that there are more and more companies in pursuit of manufacturing LED lamps with wider angles and they are aggressively seeking business opportunities in China.

Sean Zhou explained in detail about LED application trends in stores and hotels. He expressed that improvement of LED quality will expedite the replacement of CDM, and products under 2700-5000K CCT color warmth will increase to 80-90CRI. The market needs consistency between light sources, and the increased projection lamp usage will elevate the market demand.

Finally, he concluded this presentation with a brief introduction of LUXEON system from a technical perspective with detailed explanation of its sturdiness and reliability.

Allen Lee, Director of Everlight Lighting Sales Dept. of Everlight Electronics(photo credit:LEDinside)

Allen Lee, Director of Everlight Lighting Sales Dept. of Everlight Electronics: The Rise of LED Lighting Market for Green Buildings

Lee started his session with a humorous approach. What hates LED the most? (The answer is mosquito because LED does not emit UV rays, which attracts mosquitoes and insects.) Who likes LED the most? (The answer is likely females because the absence of UV will not cause to freckles and potential premature aging.)

He then went on to talk about the rise of LED market with statistical data. He stressed that traditional lighting market increases at 5% annual growth rate while LED grows at more than 30%. He believes that demand for incandescent light bulbs will start decreasing by 2012 whereas fluorescent and energy saving light bulbs will become the most popular replacement options. Since the flashing problem still remains in LED, it is expected that rapid growth will begin from 2014 to 2015. If the manufacturing cost can be lowered to a certain level, the materialization may come sooner.
