The 2011 Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition Series: Spotlight to Shine on COB Package
The 2011 Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition successfully embodies the theme of “LED Asia,” which will continue being the theme of the exhibition in the following years that gathers not only major manufacturers from Asia, Europe and America but also buyers around the world. This year’s exhibition includes over 2,600 manufacturers and attracts a considerable amount of visitors from China as well as from all around the world.
However, according to LEDinside’s observation, despite the large scale of LED industry and the great amount of LED makers worldwide, the LED products will remain pricey compared to other relevant products until the LED industry enters the mature stage, which will be achieved by the continuous expansion of the LED lighting market and intense competition.
According to LEDinside’s survey, among all the lighting component makers, with the slogan of “Freedom from Binning,” Philips Lumileds launched new products, which were immune to the LED bin code issue, with their color coordinates locked within 3-Step MacAdam ellipses.
Moreover, the Japanese Citizen launched high-quality COB package products with stable color coordinates achieved by a package of multiple tiny LED chips. Citizen also provided experiment data to prove that their products not only have very low luminous decay but also passed the test American Energy Star. So far, Citizen’s products mainly focus on outdoor lighting and commercial lighting sector, but it will continue expanding its product line to other sectors.
GE showcased its new modularized LED street lamp, which applied to all sorts of roads, residential areas, business parks and industrial parks, with a lifespan up to 50,000 hours (with over 80% lumen maintenance). Among their new products, there were four new optical modules which realized an efficiency upgrade from 39W to 237W and provided luminous flux outputs from 2600lm to 17800lm. Many locations in American have adopted the optical modules; Xian also prides itself in being the first location in China that adopts the new modules. In addition, A19 light bulb and edge-lit LED light products have become the new focus in the market.
As for Taiwanese manufacturers, Lextar, Everlight, ProLight, High Power all launched new LED modules. Based on the feedback from the buyers at GILE this year, the COB package products were fairly acclaimed.
According to LEDinside’s observation, many major manufacturers, including Bridgelux, GE, Cree, Osram, showcased their light engines which were composed of LED modules and thermal dissipation devices and could be adopted directly to various light sources and light products. They were well-received at the exhibition and attracted a considerable amount of attention.
Also, LEDinside discovered that at this year’s exhibition, despite the fact that LED light products accounted for 85% of all exhibition products, the foreign market still focused on traditional light products since some fields still require traditional light sources. Nonetheless, starting from 2011, the shipment of LED light products has been surging greatly due to the increasing LED penetration rate.
In terms of the orders the participating manufacturers received at the exhibition, the numbers have generally increased compared to 2010. It was easier to stand out and score orders from mature markets for those manufacturers which exhibited high-quality products. In the LED package market in 2011, the main focus remained on building lighting, office lighting, decorating lighting and commercial lighting; LED applications in residential space are still yet to become the mainstream. But with more major makers such as Osram, Toshiba, GE, Philips, Panasonic launching LED products for residential space, the popularity is expected to increase in the future.
Taiwanese maker Foxsemicon launched various modules and LED light bulbs.
German maker Tridonic exhibited its new lighting control and smart lighting control system.
Cree manufactured high-efficiency LED chip (US$1/500 lm to 700 lm.)
Toshiba showcased its new LED light products with higher quality.
Taiwanese maker Beautiful Light’s cozy booth, which adopted LED chips of Nichia and Cree.
