The Pearl River Delta area has always been the base of Chinese LED companies, in particular LED package makers, and plays an important role in the Chinese LED industry. Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition 2012, held in the pivot city of the Pearl River Delta area, understandably became a vital event for the Chinese LED players. Therefore, the exhibition consisted of most China-based LED package makers.
According to LEDinside research, as opposed to their copycat strategy in the past, Chinese companies showcased products which highlighted their own technological strengths and breakthroughs. It shows that Chinese LED firms start to develop their own technological force in hope of catching up with global big names.
Refond’s 3014 package is claimed to be able to go 6,000 hours without any luminous decay, making it a supreme choice in manufacturing fluorescent tubes and panel lights. 3014 package was first developed by Taiwanese manufacturers for notebook backlight, but due to its great thermal dissipation design and small size, it shines in the lighting sector. With abundant experiences in LED packaging, Refond establishes itself as one of the major suppliers for 3014 package.
Refond is the only Chinese package maker that engages in both lighting and backlight sector and manages to acquire decent market shares. Considering that lighting and backlight markets have different peak and low seasons, it is a smart move to set foot in both areas. Despite the stagnant outlook for the lighting market and possible layoffs of certain companies, Refond actually launched recruitment at the exhibition.
Honglitronic
Honglitronic is currently the biggest maker of SMD LED in the Chinese market, but its innovations show no signs of stopping. Honglitronic is the first Chinese LED package manufacturer to pass LM-80 testing.
Honglitronic showcased its MLCOB tube (pure white, 3.6W, 140lm/W), another choice for fluorescent light tube makers.
Lighting Optoelectronic Technology exhibited many new products, including 3014, 3020, 3030 LED, whose size is 0.52mm and luminous efficacy 160lm/W. In terms of LED power, the company provides different choices ranging from 0.06W-04W.
The rapid development of Lighting Optoelectronic serves as a great example for Chinese package makers.
NATIONSTAR
Aside from LED components, LED package maker NATIONSTAR also exhibited lighting products. It seems the bright prospects for lighting market have caught up on the package makers as well. NATIONSTAR’s lighting fixtures have acquired CQC certification, aiming to make inroads into the Chinese lighting market.

CHANGFANG’s exhibition area did not make a strong impression at the first glance, but in fact, the company is one of the forerunners in the LED component market. The company has been proactively making its way into the downstream market and has invested a considerable amount of fund in R&D.
Perspective from LEDinside
According to LEDinside research, Chinese market has moved on from the phase where every time a pioneer releases a new product, all the players join the ranks and in turn engage each other in a fierce price war. At present, only with strengths in product development, manufacture management and marketing strategy can a manufacturer outrun others in the cut-throat race.
Based on LEDinside’s observation, the participating companies at Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition 2012 focused on highlighting their own unique technological strengths in the hope of differentiating themselves from others. However, the problems in managing and operation aspects usually start to emerge when the business grows to a certain level. How to tackle the problems and maintain competence is the pressing issue for the Chinese package makers.
