Osram’s booth design this year was similar to Light + Building 2012, where the company had two separate booths, observed Roger Chu, Director, Research, LEDinside. The separate booths highlighted lighting applications and advanced lighting technology at this year’s show, which will run from March 31 to April 4, 2014 at Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Center in Germany.

Osram Lightify wireless lighting system
Osram displayed a smart lighting system Lightify at the Frankfurt lighting show. Similar to other smart lighting systems on the market, the product integrates mobile device interfaces with WLAN. By using a Gateway coupled with wireless technology Zigbee, a bridge of communication and transmission is established between the device and luminaire. A single Gateway currently can control 50 luminaires.

Highly efficient 215 lm/W T8 LED tubes
Through this 215 lm/W T8 LED tube model, Osram showed off its technological strengths in LED manufacturing. By mixing more than two LED color chips including red and green whitish chips with an in-house developed phosphor, the LED tube can achieve color temperatures of 3,000K, luminous flux of 3,000 lumens, while keeping a power consumption of only 18W.

Flexible LED luminaires
It appears flexible luminaires will no longer be solely an OLED trademark. Osram’s display of flexible LED luminaires show even LEDs can bend it like Beckham. The German manufacturer’s flexible LED luminaires uses a different approach from conventional manufacturing where LED and light guide technology is required. Osram simplified the manufacturing process with flexible LED strips, which also can lower costs significantly. The flexible LED luminaire design from a single LED strip shown also offers better design quality.

Advanced automotive lighting technology
Osram’s strength has always been in automotive lighting. The company displayed laser headlamps for advanced automotive lighting technology. The laser headlamps enables farther lighting range and are already being applied in BMW i8 (see left photo). In addition, Osram has also launched a OLED rear lights that consists of OLED panels.. Although, the OLED automotive lighting is still at the R&D stage, the company estimates the product will be officially launched in 2016 (see right photo).
