【CES 2020】China Companies Demonstrate Micro LED Displays Backed by Taiwan Supply Chain

CES 2020 gathered more than 170,000 attendees with 4500 companies and 1100 industry experts presenting their latest technologies and insights of the industry.

Apart from the Micro LED displays demonstrated by Japan and Korea technology giant, LEDinside found that Chinese packagers, display makers and TV brands also presents their developments in Mini LED and Micro LED, attracting visitors coming from all over the world. Several of the exhibits are supported by technologies of Taiwanese companies including Epistar and EVERLIGHT.

Konka

The Micro LED TV series of Konka APHAEA, “Smart Wall,” was showcased at CES 2020. Konka considered that Micro LED display technology serves as a critical access to the era of “5G+8K” and exhibited a 118-inch 4K and a 234-inch Micro LED displays. Through modular splicing, the displays can fit into different areas for various applications.

However, to be more precise, these kind of mega-size LED displays are still part of ultra-fine pitch display. Konka’s staff privately revealed its advanced Micro LED display to LEDinside. The Micro LED display sized 5.6-inch with 200 ppi resolution. The RGB chips used in the display are smaller than 20µm and were transferred to glass backplane with mass transfer technology. Mass production of the product is not yet scheduled by Konka’s team believes that it will enter the market soon.

PLANAR/Leyard

Display brand PLANAR has been a strong player in the business display market and become a subsidiary of China’s Leyard. At CES 2020, PLANAR exhibited its newly developed large sized Micro LED displays. Its 216-inch 8K ultra-fine pitch display has a pitch size of only 0.0625mm with 4-in-1 RGB LED. The 108-inch fine pitch display is with a pitch size of P 0.7mm with 0404 RGB LED package.

Since Leyard recently joined force with Taiwan’s Epistar and its subsidiary Yenrich for building a new Micro/Mini LED center in China, the products shown at CES are result of their collaboration. Epistar offers micron size RGB chips while Yenrich worked on packaging and transferring the chips. Meanwhile, Leyard was in charge of system design. With the partnership, the team is ready to welcome the prospering market of Micro LED.

Refond

Refond demonstrated several Micro/Mini LED solutions and products in applications of consumer electronics. For the category of self-emitting display, Refond presented a P0.69mm display and the smart LED display solution with an ultra-fine pitch of P0.49mm.

In addition, the company unveiled for the first time its display module with a pitch size of only 0.39mm.

TCL

TCL VERY Lighting, the TCL’s subsidiary, revealed a transparent RGB Micro LED display sized only 48*48 mm with a resolution of 120*120. Despite that its size and resolution are not impressively high, the display adopted chips that are only 100*60µm. TCL worked with Taiwan’s EVERLIGHT on the Micro LED display and their ultimate goal is to implement the display for automotive applications for signal indication.
