Human Factors in LED Lighting Designs – TILS 2017

The 2017 Taiwan International Lighting Show (TILS) and LED Taiwan 2017 were held in Taipei, Taiwan from April 12 to 15. Under the theme “Smart Design and Innovative Applications”, the exhibitions showcased state-of-the-art lighting products that are designed to improve people’s quality of life. Here are some products and solutions that LEDinside wants to share with our readers.

Unity ty Opto Technology adds smart lighting to its holistic portfolio

Marketing with the “100% Made in Taiwan” claim, LED packaging manufacturer Unity ty Opto Technology (Unity) has successfully expanded its business to assembly and sale of lighting fixtures and now owns a complete portfolio of LED lighting products. It showcased high bay lights, LED tubs, panel lights, light bulbs, street lights and grow lights at TILS 2017. Unity is an OEM as well as ODM, and it now focuses more on ODM businesses that allow them to receive feedbacks from clients and continue to improve its products accordingly. This shows that Unity is making great efforts to differentiate from a sea of rivals in the general lighting market.

Currently, in the U.S., Unity’s LED lighting products are sold to large distributors, and in Europe and Taiwan, they are sold under the brand Toshiba. Unity said after partnering with Toshiba, sales have increased thanks to the Japanese brand’s worldwide popularity.  (LEDinside)

On the other side of the booth, Unity set up a smart home section to showcase their connected lighting devices. For instance, dimming, on/off and color of LED lights can be managed with a remote control via Bluetooth. A motion sensor is included to control on/off as well. Also, these lights can be connected to a doorbell and the system would activate flashing light when someone rings the doorbell.

Another product that caught our attention is an intelligent, atmosphere LED ceiling lamp that has 310,000 kinds of color tone for users to choose and can be adjusted by a remote control. The company told LEDinside that this dimming LED light is quite popular among young people and designers in Taiwan. In fact, Japan’s Sharp launched a similar product – a sakura (cherry blossom)-colored LED light – back in 2012, which is said to provide a sense of healing and contribute to better sleep. It is evident that this type of human-centric lighting products still have market potential.

LED Smart Footlight by Epoch Lighting

Epoch Lighting specializes in the design and manufacture of LCD backlight modules. Starting in 2009, it began diversifying its product portfolios to LED lighting and now offers a wide range of LED lighting products. It manufactures and sells most of its products in Taiwan. At TILS 2017, the company debuted its LED Smart Footlight, which is the first-ever under-bed and cabinet sensor light in Taiwan and was awarded the “Innovation Product Award in Indoor Lighting Category” by the organizer.

Based on human-centric optical design and headlight technology, the product claims to provide the perfect shade of light and brightness at night. The sensor has a 70-degree adjustable angle, enabling flexible installation based on different needs. In addition, the device integrates a light sensor and a motion sensor to make sure it only lights up at night and when someone is in the room, which can avoid energy waste. It also saves users the trouble of looking for their smartphones or remote control in the dark. Epoch Lighting said the LED Smart Footlight guarantees safety at night with minimum disturbance, which is especially suitable for families with children and elderly people. It is scheduled to come on the market in June.

Delta Electronics showcased integrated smart lighting solutions

As cities and lighting gradually become smart, Delta Electronics has been leveraging every available resource to provide complete smart lighting solutions including components, products, systems and services. The results were exhibited at TILS 2017.

Delta has moved to create smart cities by providing a comprehensive solution that includes a smart LED street light, display, environmental sensor, camera and an electric vehicle charging station. (LEDinside)

For instance, Delta showcased an indoor lighting management solution that is controlled via a touch panel and intelligent drive electronics. It has single live wire power supply and does not require electrical wiring.

Also, Delta Electronics acquired Austria-based building automation company Loytec in 2016 to jointly develop the Building Management and Control System (BMCS). The system is compatible with various communication protocols, so users can integrate and manage sub-systems like air conditioning, lighting, electricity and security– either from Delta or other manufacturers –within a building.

Moreover, the building management software offers an all-in-one management and control platform that greatly enhances operation efficiency and save costs.

As for street lighting, Delta exhibited several LED models that can be fitted with additional applications such as light sensor and environmental sensor. ON/OFF, dimming control and monitoring can be achieved by Delta’s cloud-based platform. Under the government’s LED street light conversion scheme, Delta has already installed over 30,000 LED street lights in cities across Taiwan.

Although some may think that smart lighting or human centric lighting is not yet relevant to their lives, connectivity and intelligence undeniably represent the future of lighting. It'd be interesting to see what products and services companies would roll out in the future.
