Royal Philips, FC Bayern Munich, the German soccer champions, and its home stadium Allianz Arena, today announced a partnership that will make the stadium the first in Germany and the largest in Europe to feature a dynamic light show made possible by energy efficient connected LED lighting. Germany’s AZZURO Pushing GaN-on-Si LED Wafer to Cut Manufacturing Time and Cost Germany’s AZZURRO, founded in 2003, focuses on supplying power semiconductor device and LED manufacturers with wafers. AZZURRO owns patents in GaN-on-Si technology. The company’s way is to grow a buffer layer based on GaN material on Si substrate, and then grow a GaN film on the wafer according to different needs of LED and power semiconductor device application. The company noted that currently it can make GaN-on-Si wafer on a 6-inch (150mm) Si substrate, aiming to push it to 8-inch (200mm). Germany LED test and measurement company Instrument Systems revenues for 2010 rose by 47.1% to EUR 10.3 million, compared with EUR 7.0 million in 2009, which was a best result since the company was founded in 1986.

Germany-based GaN (gallium nitride) epitaxial wafers manufacturer Azzurro Semiconductors invested EUR 14.5 million to build a new joint company, with expanding production ability for GaN-on-silicon epitaxial wafers. Azzurro noted, the new company was planed to choose in Dresden. And the funding was supplied by new partners including Wellington Partners, Good Energies and Emerald Technology Ventures and former investor Cedrus Private Equity and IBG Innovationsfonds.

AIXTRON AG today announced that its next generation MOCVD Platform AIX G5 HT has demonstrated high quality GaN deposition at very high growth rates and high pressure above 600mbar and superior GaN/InGaN uniformities. The epitaxial runs were performed at Epistar Corporation, located in the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, Taiwan consecutively without reactor baking or swapping of any parts. The MOCVD reactor is now being transferred into mass production.

Everlight Electronics Co. Ltd. announced that the company’s LED-based SL-Dolphin street light will illuminate two streets in the Czech capital Prague within the scope of a pilot project that tests various street lights based on LED technology. The test series, carried out by Eltodo, the Czech lighting designer and nationwide electric installation service company, in cooperation with the city administration of Prague, aims at gathering experience with and accurate information on seven LED street lights of six different suppliers.

Applied Materials, Inc., Merck KGaA and the Braunschweig University of Technology (TU-BS) Tuesday announced that they have been awarded a grant by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to develop processes to lower the cost of manufacturing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) lighting for general illumination applications.

AIXTRON AG announced that a further AIX 200/4 RF-S MOCVD system has been installed and successfully started operation at Tokuyama R&D center in Tsukuba, Japan. With its 1 mm² thin-film chip in stack technology it generates an optical output of almost 1 W from a driving current of 1 A – that’s almost twice the output of the standard chips that have been used up to now.
