Recently, Chicony Electronics’ wholly owned subsidiary, Chicony Power Technology had shipped LED lighting device to Clevo's China retail subsidiary Buynow, which adopted into its shopping malls as well as Clevo's partially invested Chicony department stores. It’s said that Chicony Power’s LED lighting products would emphasized the consumer and enterprise market in china. The company was expected to be list on Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) within the next 1-2 years.

Benefit from stronger shipments for LED TV backlight applications, Taiwan LED chip packaging house Bright LED Electronics wanted to December revenues would be NT$400 million (US$13.5 million) and full year revenues would reach NT$5.1 billion in 2010, with up 20% compared to 2009.

Taiwan barcode scanner manufacturer, Marson Technology, has announced the launch of MT7930T dual light source (Bi-color) CCD barcode scanner.

Recently, LED chipmaker Epistar decided to issue euro convertible bonds (ECBs) worth US$280 million, with using for paying back previous US dollar-based loans and for future equipment purchases. Epistar noted, although it’s said LED industry would display over supply in 2011, the company remained optimistic about the future potential LED market growth, and was ready for capacity expansion for future demand. In the LED lighting market, the company planed to expand its capacity to meet continuing growing demand.

Sino-American Silicon Products (SAS) wanted to sapphire wafer materials’ sales would reach 5-6% of revenues in 2011 from 2% estimated for 2010. A leader of the company said, SAS was ready for producing 120,000-180,000 units LED sapphire substrates in 2011 from 60,000 in 2010. The new adding capacity would bring much more business sales.

Lextar Electronics ("Lextar" or the "Company") (TAIEX: 3698) announced that it has successful demonstrated bright light emission from the processed wafer using the advanced 6-inch technology. It signatures an important milestone for Lextar to become the first LED company in Taiwan to light up the 6-inch processed wafer. Lextar’s New Process Project Team employs the unique exposure and grinding technology, therefore can avoid the issue of wafer warp and crack which is the most challenging in 6-inch chip process.

In the first six month of 2010, sapphire substrate supplier Crystal Applied Technology’s EPS was only NT$1.50 but the figure increased substantially to NT$11.75 at the end of November. The company noted the strong result benefitted from the increasing prices for sapphire crystals, as well as increased capacity in 2Q10.

FPD equipment maker Mirle Automation and LED driver IC designer Macroblock had jointly developed an LED display control system—— Mirle 503. Mirle noted the Mirle 503 had a built-in Macroblock MBI5042 16-channel constant current LED driver with 16-bit PWM (pulse width modulation) control. With the MBI5042, all output channels could be built with 16-bit color depth (65,536 gray scales).

With demand LED backlight applications on the rise, Taiwan LED chip packager Unity Opto Technology expected monthly revenues to hit NT$700 billion (US$23.39 million) in 1Q 11. And the Full-year revenues for 2011 were expected to raise 80% to NT$12 billion from 2010.

Based on the potential 500 billion yuan (NT$2.3 trillion) opportunity in China's next five-year development plan which includes upgrading the LED industry as one of its major goals, a Taiwanese LED street lamp alliance has signed a letter of intent with a Taiwan affairs task force under China's Fujian provincial government to set up a world-class LED lighting company.  

Amtran Technology expected its revenues would reach NT$100 billion (US$3.34 billion) in 2011, with subsidiary Raken Technology completing capacity expansion in 2011 and bringing annual revenues to US$3 billion. A leader of the company noted, 4Q10 would be the most profitable period in 2010 following record sales in November and strong performance in December. And it made Amtran overtake Samsung Electronics as the top TV vendor in North America in 3Q, and it is likely to retain its ranking in 4Q.

Recently, Formosa Epitaxy announced the inauguration of its LED chip subsidiary based in Yangzhou, China, which could become China's largest epitaxial wafer maker in 2012 when it completed the installation of 50 MOCVD machines. Formosa Epitaxy chairman noted, the company expected LED chip demand return to the levels of the first half of 2010 in February and March of 2011, and mass shipments for applications in tablet PCs would begin in February as well.

Taiwan-based LED lighting solutions and products provider, Xodtec LED, Inc., is lighting up the dome of the Fullon Hotel and Resort in Hualien City, Taiwan with RGB full color LED wall washers, expecting to make these buildings prominent among all hotels in Hualien City. Xodtec RGB full color LED wall washer is compliant with RoHS, power consumption 40W, and capable to emit more than sixteen million colors. With the colorfull LED wall washers, the grand dome is expected to be the new landmark.

It’s reported that Taiwan-based Company NuLight intends to invest $200 million (around Rs 900 crore) to build a LED manufacturing unit which dedicates to manufacture LED street lamps and household bulbs.

The full-year revenues for Taiwan-based LED chip maker Epistar was expected to reach NT$20 billion in 2010, up 50% compared to 2009. And Net income for 2010 will range from NT$5.5-6 billion. Meanwhile, the company would take NT$800 million for the employee bonuses, and everyone would receive over NT$200,000 on average, with 3,700 employees. Also, Epistar planed to raise salaries by 8% on average.

In Taiwan market, it’s said that the sales of LED-backlit LCD monitor in 3Q10 reached 125,000 units, with a 25% share in the overall local LCD monitor market. While In 1Q10, the sales were only 26,000 units and up to 30,000 units in 2Q10, with less than 10% share .

At the recent Beijing-Taiwan Science and Technology Forum held in Taichung, Taiwan, a leader of Taiwan-based LED chip maker Epistar said, if production cost of lighting-grade LED chips would fall to US$1/500lm in the next 2-3 years, LED lighting's market penetration would reach 20-30% in 2012.

BenQ has launched the XL2410T which is the first 3D LED backlit Full HD monitor at a press conference in India. The XL2410T has been co-developed with the help of two professional gamers Emil "HeatoN" Christensen and Abdisamad "SpawN" Mohamed.  

LED Industry Faces Slack Season in the Short Term and LEDinside Forecasts that Growth Momentum will Rebound after 1Q11

Industry sources noted Everlight Electronics’ LED backlight products had entered the supply chain of table PCs, and the shipment for LED backlight products was expected to increase several times in 2011.

According to Mike Bryant, CTO of Future Horizons at the Industry Forecast Seminar 2010 in London, LED TVs is the star product of the electronics industry this year. Bryant’s opinion was mainly based on the picture quality of LED TVs which is far superior to traditional LCD TV.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) was aiming to stand in the worldwide top-five LED player position.

Taiwan semiconductor and panel equipment maker Gallant Precision Machining (GPM), reported November revenues of NT$610 million (US$20.3 million), which was of NT$319 million in October. GPM's revenues for the first 11 months of 2010 increased 57.4% from a year earlier to total NT$2.96 billion. The company estimated its equipment for panels, solar energy products and semiconductor would account for 40%, 25% and 25%, respectively, of 2010 revenues.

Extending the uses of their technology into yet another application, GlacialLight, a sub-division of the experienced technology manufacturer GlacialTech Inc., announces a totally brand-new product, an LED panel light series named Pollux. Designed to be both fashionable and functional, the very first Pollux series LED panel lights are ideal for replacing traditional tube lights or grid lights.

Taiwan-based LED chip maker Lextar Electronics expected the ratio for LED lighting applications would reach over 10% of its revenues in the end of 2010, from less than 5% at the beginning of 2010. And the company was to reduce product development time from 2-6 months to 1-3 months through integrate vertically.

In Taiwan's LCD monitor market, it’s expected that Asustek and Acer was in the first position and second position respectively.
