AIXTRON AG today announced that its next generation MOCVD Platform AIX G5 HT has demonstrated high quality GaN deposition at very high growth rates and high pressure above 600mbar and superior GaN/InGaN uniformities. The epitaxial runs were performed at Epistar Corporation, located in the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, Taiwan consecutively without reactor baking or swapping of any parts. Topco Energy Saving System Corp. (TESS) announced the latest innovation in Feb. The new 9W / 9.5 W LED bulbs are designed with CREE LED chips inside. With the leading technology, the 9W cool white bulb reaches 700 lumens and it can replace 70W incandescent bulb.

Recently, Lextar Electronics Corp., a LED-chip manufacturing subsidiary of Taiwan's largest TFT-LCD panel maker AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), won order from Samsung of South Korea for LCD TV-panel backlights. Local LED makers said that Lextar would ship in-house packed LEDs to Samsung with LED chips supplied by Nichia of Japan and Epistar of Taiwan.

Everlight Electronics Co. Ltd. announced that the company’s LED-based SL-Dolphin street light will illuminate two streets in the Czech capital Prague within the scope of a pilot project that tests various street lights based on LED technology. The test series, carried out by Eltodo, the Czech lighting designer and nationwide electric installation service company, in cooperation with the city administration of Prague, aims at gathering experience with and accurate information on seven LED street lights of six different suppliers.

Recently, Taiwan's LED makers, coordinated by the government-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), have set up a consortium comprising manufacturers of all related sectors.

As the market penetration rate of LED-backlit LCD TVs gradually picks up, LED makers from Japan, Korea, Europe, Taiwan, and China are implementing their strategies in LED chips and LED package modules for LCD TV backlights. As for TV vendors, Korea’s Samsung and LG are very optimistic about the outlook for the LED market. Their projections of LED penetration in TV backlighting reflect high LED consumption. Furthermore, these two companies have their own LED chip and package capacities, and they outsource the unmet portion to Taiwan manufacturers.

Nan Ya Photonics Inc., will first reduce capital by 40% and then increase capital to NT$2 billion (US$62 million at US$1:NT$32) some time this quarter as part of its plan to enter into alliance with LED player Epistar Corp.

Genius Electronics Optical Co., Ltd. recently won a contract to supply over 1,000 LED streetlights to several local governments in southern China, marking its first success in tapping mainland China`s LED streetlight market after entering into alliance with Philips Lumileds.

AU Optronics Corp, the world's No.3 liquid crystal display maker, said it is working on a tie-up with a local LED chip designer to ensure its strength in the fast-growing LED-lit LCD TV market. AU Optronics said it was working on concrete details with Global Mixed-mode Technology Inc.. AU said a tie-up could pave the way for it to strengthen its cost competitiveness if it could secure a new generation of power-saving LED chips from GMT.

Taiwan-based LED supplier Epistar Corp. and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) have formed an LED chip joint venture based in Mainland China.

Featuring ultra high power EdiStar emitter, the circular EDIS module integrates thermal, electrical, mechanical and optical aspects to deliver a total LED lighting solution. Depending on the application, EDIS module is available in 50W and 100W, with three CCT options at Cool White, Neutral White and Warm White for each. The ultra-high power 100W EdiStar emitters offer 7,000lm, equivalent to the brightness of 400W mercury lamp with less energy consumption as much as 70%.

According to Taiwanese official resources, in light of the upcoming sales boom in the LED industry, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) is going to push for formation of an LED R&D alliance to assist Taiwanese LED manufacturers to obtain cross-licenses from patent possessors in the U.S., Japan and Europe to reduce patent infringement risks in the future.

Faced with issues such as energy shortage and global warming, governments across the globe have implemented various incentives and subsidies for energy-saving products. Shuen Der Industry Co., Ltd. (SDI ), a Taiwanese supplier of LED lead frames for automotives and consumer electronics, has invested NT$80 million (US$2.46 million at US$1: NT$32.5) to expand output of the products.

Recently, BenQ has announced a couple of 16:9 LCD monitors that feature LED backlighting, the 21.5-inch V2210 and the 24-inch V2410 in Japan. Both new displays have a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a 5ms response time, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m2 brightness, the Senseye image enhancement technology, plus DVI and HDMI outputs. BenQ has not yet reveal any prices but said that the V2210 will hit (Japanese) stores on December 25th, and the V2410 will follow on the 30th.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest dedicated semiconductor foundry, has unveiled modular BCD (Bipolar, CMOS DMOS) process technologies targeting high voltage integrated LED driver devices.
