A new, more energy-efficient McDonald’s is now open in the Saltbox Village shopping center in Cary, N.C. Featuring LED lighting from Durham-based Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE), the new building is on-track to be the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified McDonald’s in the state.

GM will use LED daytime running lights as a way to add visual distinction to its vehicles, according to a conversation Car and Driver’s Steve Siler had with Jim Federico, GM’s vehicle line executive for midsize cars like the Chevy Malibu and Cadillac CTS. The LEDs appear in the new Buick LaCrosse and give the headlamps an opportunity to distinguish GM products. Elgo, one of Europe’s lighting companies, shows good sales activity of bulbs using Acriche. In addition, Acriche is used in solid state lighting products manufactured by Molex, a global leading electronics manufacturer. Products from Molex will be available in the third quarter of this year. Seoul Semiconductor is expected to make serious inroads into the GU10 market which consists of about 300 million bulbs per year and is worth approximately 1.2 billion dollars.

Some venture capital firms in the U.S. are glowing about energy efficient lighting companies and they are investing large sums of money in this sector, according to an article on Wall Street Journal. New York-based Braemar Energy Ventures and San Francisco-based VantagePoint Venture Partners are both targeting $50 million of investments at energy efficient lighting companies currently. And VantagePoint may increase that amount by another $50 million within the next year.

The Challenge The Allegheny County Jail, a 900,000 square foot Pennsylvania facility that opened in 1996, faced expensive power and maintenance costs associated with outdated lighting in the jail’s 35 inmate housing pods, and elsewhere in the facility. The jail also faced a security issue because the light fixtures hung from the ceiling in a manner that blocked some security camera views. The existing lights were 2x2 High Intensity Discharge fixtures (HID), using a 250 W metal halide lamp, with additional ballast wattage of 45 W.

Chuck Swoboda Participates in Presidential Roundtable On American Innovation and Clean Energy Technology Chuck Swoboda, chairman and chief executive officer of Cree (Nasdaq:CREE) joined President Obama at the White House today to discuss the latest developments in energy-efficient technologies. Cree, based in Durham, North Carolina, is a market-leading manufacturer of LED (light-emitting diode) products.

The major products exhibited by the company were LED components, which attracted a number of visitors. Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition 2009 was held at Guangzhou Pazhou Complex from June 09 to 12. At the show this year, the 12 exhibition halls were filled with some 1600 exhibitors, compared to 1676 manufacturers last year.

I-Chiun Precision Industry Co., Ltd., a global supplier of LED (light-emitting diode) light guide frames, announced that it has established a joint venture with the Chinese American tycoon Jeffery Wu, a major shareholder of United International Bank of the U.S., to explore the LED lighting market in the U.S., according to a report in Taiwan Economic News.

Lagotek Corporation, a developer of residential and commercial building automation systems, today announced an agreement with Advanced Control Technologies (ACT), a leader in the development of wired and wireless residential and commercial control products.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation will start replacing incandescent lighting at intersections throughout the state with LEDs to save money and energy. The department says the work will begin Monday. Some 380 intersections will be upgraded with the new lighting. The Transportation Department signed a contract with the state Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department to do the work. EMNRD received a $5 million grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the project.

The Lindenplatz in Hamburg's St. Georg district, a city landmark and also the place the German company Siemens is based, has recently been redesigned with LED solutions by the company in collaboration with the city of Hamburg as well as some local businesses. The lighting manufacturer OSRAM, part of Siemens' industry business unit, has provided the LED lighting modules used in the project.

GlacialTech Inc. is launching star-bright environmentally friendly LED spotlights. The GL-SP30 LED high brightness spotlight  consumes no more than 38W of power and will replace traditional Halogen lamps which usually consume in excess of  300W per lamp. The lifespan of these LED lamps is 35,000Hrs, whereas the halogen spotlight lasts for 3,000hrs only. The predicted savings rate is 88% when compared with Halogen spotlights.

In London, LED lighting has been introduced to replace the conventional lighting at all of the city’s roadside ticket machines, reducing 75 per cent of the energy consumption, according to Transport for London (TfL).

Utilizing UPEC’s superior ceramic packing technology for high power LED, CP150 is packed with the smallest size and still can keep excellent thermal conductivity and higher CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion). Furthermore, the heat dissipation of high power LED will no longer be an issue for CP150 series and the lifetime can reach 50,000 hours.
