Lighting Science Group Corporation (LSG) recently announced that Arizona State University (ASU) has taken another step in its commitment to 'going green' by retrofitting six parking structures on the Tempe campus with new light emitting-diode (LED) fixtures. Changing the existing fixtures to Lighting Science's LED low bay solution will afford ASU with an annual savings of up to $127,000 in energy and maintenance costs for the six structures that were retrofit.

The roof of Melbourne’s new Rectangular Stadium would be covered with thousands of LED lights that can shine in any color and be programmed into a multitude of patterns, Tim Pallas, Major Projects Minister of Australia recently announced. Researchers at the University of Connecticut have made a new material that emits bright white light by adding fluorescent dyes to DNA and then spinning the DNA strands into nanofibers, according to a paper published online in the journal Angewandte Chemie. The researchers create white-light-emitting devices by coating ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with the material. They are even able to fine-tune the white color tone to make it warm or cold.

The City of Danville is likely to become the first LED city in Virginia, the United States. City officials say that the city has received a 50 thousand dollar grant for it to switch to new LED lights in different parts of the city. LEDs use less energy, last longer and are more environmentally friendly. So far, they've been installed at the water plant, and at the adult detention center.
