Silk Road Economic Belt (or One-Belt One-Road), China’s initiative to strengthen cooperation among countries between China and Euroasia, has opened up many new opportunities across industries.

Monocrystal, a global leader in synthetic sapphire growing and processing, shipped its 5 millionth four-inch equivalent (FIE) sapphire wafer. Large diameter wafers have recently become a mainstream product, driven by LED makers’ immediate benefit from a 30% increase in MOCVD reactor throughput and higher binning yields. At the same time, sapphire wafer shape and cleanness are crucial in achieving high epitaxial yields and getting the benefits of using large diameters.

On July 21, the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI) held a Forum and an Innovation Exhibition at the VDNH (the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy) in Moscow.  One of the largest expositions at the show was that of Monocrystal’s, which demonstrated sapphire epi-polished wafers for LEDs, sapphire screens for smartphones, and metallization pastes for solar cell manufacturing. 

Scientists from MIPT’s Laboratory of the Biophysics of Excitable Systems have discovered how to control the behavior of heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) using laser radiation; this study will help scientists to better understand the mechanisms of the heart and could ultimately provide a method of treating arrhythmia. More manufacturers are turning to emerging markets that hold high growth potential as maturing U.S., Europe and Japanese markets become saturated. Emerging markets including India, Thailand, and Russia hold many business opportunities for LED manufacturers, due to their high reliance on LED chips, components and package imports.

In recent years, the LED lighting market has blossomed in emerging countries, and manufacturers’ development strategies in these markets have become increasingly important. This is mainly because in mature markets, such as Europe and Japan, global traditional luminaire brands still have the greatest market share. While in highly competitive countries, such as China where it appears profitable, many manufacturers have been unable to reap profits.

Will Russia become the next Pure Land for the LED industry? Or is it a market full of unknown risks? Could it be a paradise for foreign manufacturers? Or is it market full of threats? Out of potential emerging markets, LEDinside analysts have chosen the Russian market for “further studies”. Why not Southeast Asia, Middle East, or South America? What is so special about Russia that the LED lighting industry “should not” miss out?

Manufacturers, who hope to leave the fiercely competitive Chinese lighting market and other mature lighting markets, are turning their attention to emerging Southeast Asian markets or even Russia, said Roger Chu, Research Director of LEDinside at LEDforum 2014 which took place in Taipei, Taiwan last month.

Royal Philips, the global leader in lighting, and Lexus, a premium automotive brand, unveiled the first Lexus car showroom in Russia outfitted with a unique and connected ambient lighting system that combines LEDs with textile and  dynamic content. The Lexus-Rublevskiy showroom in Moscow has been renovated for the Russian premiere of the Toyota Lexus NX, with Philips luminous textiles creating a dynamic halo of light around the car to attract the attention of customers. In Russian Federation, it is expected that LCD TV sales continue to soar within 4-5 years. But with the energy savings of the sets proving attractive to consumers, the LED backlit market share has been projected to increase substantially in the coming years. The industry estimated LED-backlit LCD TVs will comprise more than 50% of all LCD TV shipments in Russia in 2014.

Currently, Russia imports 98 % of its LED lighting, but this situation will change. State funding and investment from private companies is setting up a domestic LED infrastructure and companies all over Russia dedicated to LED lighting technologies are emerging.

Kemerovo in Siberia is converting to street lighting with LEDs by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors on a broad scale. The city of 520,000 inhabitants on the Trans-Siberian Railway has installed 200 street luminaires made by LLC TD Focus, which are equipped with Golden DRAGON oval Plus LEDs. The city can therefore achieve significant savings in energy costs and CO2 emissions.
