The LED packaging market has witnessed steady growth over the past year, says LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. According to LEDinside’s latest industry report, the annual revenue of global LED package market was US$15.975 billion in 2016, and reached US$18.035 billion in 2017. Based on the revenue of 2017, the top three LED package suppliers worldwide were Nichia, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, and Lumileds, while MLS from China climbed to fourth place thanks to its significant capacity expansion efforts.

The scale of China’s LED package market is projected to expand 16% year on year to RMB 61.4 billion in 2015, according to the latest Chinese LED Industry Market Report by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. The growth of Chinese LED package market on the whole has slowed. With China being the production center of the global LED industry, the weakening of global economy this year has led to a larger slide in the exports of the country’s LED products. The year-on-year increase of Chinese LED lighting product exports for this year’s first half is 21%, a steep decline compared with the 80% year-on-year growth for the first half of 2014.

But with chip production capacity expansion cycles taking much longer in comparison, subtle changes in the LED chip supply and demand relationship have occurred. With dispersed suppliers and chip prices more susceptible to price fluctuations, chip manufacturers have been unable to greatly raise prices leading to intensified chip shortages.

In 2013, LED package industry in China still grows very fast. Take Refond, a representative company of medium-large size LED package manufacture, for example, their revenue in the first half of 2013 meet RMB 294 millions, 67% higher on a year-on-year basis. The LED revenue for meidun-large sized backlight application went to RMB 135 millions with a 113% growth on a year-on-year basis; at the same time, their LED revenue from new small-sized backlight LED also jumped over 10 millions. Beside of this, Shenzhen Jufei Optoelectronics co., Ltd., another representative Chinese small-sized backlight LED package manufacturer’s net profit improved 25%-55% on a year-on-year basis as well. LEDinside, a green energy branch of international market investigating institute TrendFoce said that as Chinese manufacturers’ package technology keep improving, it is obvious that LED package for backlight in China is going ready emerge.
