LEDinside: Three High-End TV Market Trends

According to the latest report from LEDinside, a division of the market research firm TrendForce, Projection and Display Market Trend- 3Q17 Three High-end TV Market Trends, High quality display basically need to match the high-resolution display, to achieve high color saturation and high contrast display, so UHD (Ultra High Definition), WCG (Wide Color Gamut), HDR (High Dynamic Range) for the future pursuit of visual enjoyment of the market will be inseparable. So the increase high-resolution UHD market will also be accompanied by pulling HDR, WCG market linkage.

HDR must meet three main requirements, namely high-resolution UHD image quality, high peak brightness and wide color gamut. The high-resolution UHD display has approximately lowered 30% transmitting rate on open cell, compared with that of FHD display, therefore UHD display consumes 30~40% LEDs more than FHD display to achieve the same brightness.

2017 TV market HDR applied to different backlight system, direct light backlight accounted about 70% is higher than edge light backlight. The edge light type backlight accounted about 30%. Which supply the European and American markets using direct light backlight accounted for a higher proportion. The HDR display level in Europe and American market is higher than Asian regional market, which spur the direct light backlight market demand in the European and American market.

Direct-type backlight achieves good HDR effect, but it still has larger overall thickness, compared with that of edge light backlight. Therefore HDR high-end market will adopt cellular structure film to reduce 30%~50% thickness, decrease the local dimming area, and increase local dimming zones quantity to improve HDR quality. The cellular structure film can replace the mixing light function of 2nd lens, so the LED under this solution has no need the 2nd lens.

HDR requires peak brightness of 1000 ~ 4000 nits. It is proposed to adopt large-size LED package and CSP (Chip Scale Package) LED to achieve good heat dissipation and high current tolerance. Direct-type backlight will still mainly adopt single and dual chips on 3528 LED & 3030 LED package in 2017. It’ will be 3-in-1 for 5050 LED package size in 2018. The CSP LED applied in direct-light backlight most commonly are 1616 LED & 1313 LED and will be 1111 LED after 4Q17. The edge-light backlight primarily uses 7020 LED and 4014 LED, and it will shift to adopt 7016 LED and 4010 LED with slim LGP design in the future.

Moreover, HDR for the color gamut specification section has been normal NTSC 72% pulled up to DCI P3 90% (about NTSC 80 ~ 85%), so 2017 NTSC <90% of the specifications, the use of blue chip + RG phosphor, blue and green LEDs + KSF phosphor compared to last year's 2016 growth trend of about 30%. Future WCG requirements to NTSC 100% or more, the existing phosphor cost performance ratio is not higher than expected, so need to be converted into QD (Quantum Dot) material, so it will on the LED blue chip without phosphor. It’s bound to affect the phosphor usage volume. Current QD solution for WCG requirement about NTSC 100% is QDEF in backlight market, and about 1% in TV market. Panel suppliers actively develop the QD (Quantum Dot) material in the open cell, leaded by the Korean supplier. In the future, the QD will be popular in the WCG market.
