【Exclusive Interview】Brightek Focuses on Optical Sensing for Information Transmission and Communication to Create Immersive Experiences

Specializing in automotive applications, Brightek has recently begun focusing on optical sensing for information transmission and communication to create immersive experiences, offering value-added integration services to customers. TrendForce was honored to interview Mr. Chih Hung Tzeng, General Manager at Brightek, during ALE 2023 (Shanghai International Auto Lamp Exhibition). During the interview, Tzeng shared the company’s latest progress in optical sensing applications targeted at the automotive market.

Brightek has been striving to integrate its in-cabin ambient lights since 2022. In addition to light source diversification, the company is focused on integrating various sensing components to create immersive experiences for customers. So far, it has already entered the second development stage. The achievements were showcased at the ALE event this year, including sensing applications for smart cockpits, environmental sensors and color aberration calibration, all of which can perfectly satisfy customers’ needs.

The exhibited smart cockpit features various sensing functions incorporated into ambient lights. For example, the light and color of ambient lights can be adjusted through touch sensors. The inclusion of inertial measurement units (IMU) also provides a glimpse into a future scenario where ambient lights change colors according to driver behavior.

Windshield HUDs (W-HUD) have replaced combiner HUDs (C-HUD) to be widely applied to Levels 1 and 2 autonomy. Such displays will mostly measure 3.1"-4.1" in the coming years. In response to the growing demand for vehicle HUDs, Brightek introduced a whole-new iCLED design to help optimize the light emission performance of PGU (picture generation unit) backlight modules. With a module thickness of merely 15mm, the iCLED is able to deliver brightness of 1,500,000 nits, a 10×20 beam angle and 90% uniformity. Featuring intelligent local dimming, the product series helps enhance contrast and enables optimal display effects.

In response to the Next-Gen vehicle cabin trend, Brightek offers various options under the iCLED lineups, including a product engineered with flip-chip packaging that can meet outdoor display requirements (>5,000 nits of brightness) and also super-slim edge-lit SMT LED capable of multi-color uniformity in combination with outer-layer panels within 10-mm optical thickness. Tzeng added that the iCLED has great potential for exterior decorative, vehicle seat, and roof ambient lighting as well.

The other theme Brightek presented was environmental sensing, through which the company is attempting to improve life quality, said Tzeng. The company announced its first-ever carbon monoxide sensor. The new product, engineered with the novel nano-oxide MEMS technology, is able to detect CO with concentrations of less than 100ppm, paving a new way to active gas detection for life safety. For automotive applications, Brightek aims to develop sensors featuring detection of various gases, creating an active monitoring mechanism for in-cabin air quality control.

Corresponding module design solutions were also exhibited on site, helping customers shorten the time for familiarizing themselves with the new product.

Brightek also unveiled a technical platform for color aberration calibration in ambient lights, showcasing a series of intelligent ambient lighting solutions. As color aberration is a problem of the RGB iCLED products that has long troubled automotive customers, Brightek self-developed a UPP (Ultimate PWM Program) tuning system using its extensive experience in the automotive market. The system can largely shorten customers’ learning curve, achieve full color mixing and dynamic scenario creation with ease, and help customers attain mass production more quickly.

Brightek is the first to offer comprehensive, integrated solutions featuring sensor communication for automotive applications, enabling the creation of immersive experiences. The company has the confidence to provide the optimal customized solutions for its customers, concluded Tzeng.
