Rubicon Technology, Inc. announced Monday it would exhibit large diameter sapphire products for LED wafer production, including the 200 kg sapphire Super Boule, at the upcoming LED Japan/Strategies in Light Conference in Yokohama, Japan, held on September 16 and 17, 2009. Conference attendees can visit Rubicon in Booth M4.
Rubicon Technology will be showcasing its large diameter sapphire including 150 mm and 200 mm substrate products used for LEDs and SoS RFICs. The company will also exhibit, for the first time in Asia, its 200 kg sapphire "Super Boule" -- what the company believes to be the world's largest manufactured sapphire crystal. The super boule provides efficient volume production of 150 and 200 mm substrates and also makes possible 300mm diameter wafers for LED and SoS RFICs as well as 400 mm windows for optical applications.
Rubicon's proprietary ES2 crystal growth technology and sapphire processing capabilities continue to be scaled up to produce very large size sapphire products efficiently in production volumes. Currently, Rubicon grows bulk sapphire crystals up to 200kg with production volumes of large diameter sapphire wafers available up to 200mm diameters and optical windows up to 300 mm dimensions.
Sapphire substrates are used in very high volume production for high brightness blue and white LEDs and for high performance radio frequency integrated circuits. Both LED and SoS RFIC production continue to migrate to larger diameter sapphire wafers.
Sapphire is also an ideal material for optical uses due to its excellent transmission in UV and IR wavelengths, chemical inertness, and rugged durability under even the harshest of conditions.
