Innolux yesterday (February 6) demonstrated a 10.1-inch AM Mini LED display at a shareholder meeting. This new technology will be officially commercialized in the automotive electronics market, said Chin-Lung Ting, Executive Vice President of Innolux Corporation. Before that, the Taiwan-based company will continue the development of other devices.

Currently, the AM Mini LED display is lit by white Mini LEDs. Once RGB Mini LEDs are introduced to the display, it should be able to rival OLED, contended Ting.
Ting further analyzed the biggest advantage of the Mini LED-lit display devised by Innolux is that it features active matrix addressing scheme, which consists of a matrix of thin film transistors (TFTs) and capacitors to control the image. It helps reduce the production cost and push up the cost-performance index (CPI).
A LCD display has to have HDR imaging technique to compete with an OLED display in terms of image quality. In other words, the number of backlight local dimming zones has to be as many as possible. It is better to reach a few hundred or even a few thousand zones to create high resolution and high saturation to rival OLED, which is why the Innolux AM Mini LED display has 6720 local dimming zones.
Ting continued that automotive displays should meet the requirement to be able to present images under sunlight. OLED does stand out with its high color contrast, but automakers still prefer LCD displays considering its reliability.
Several automakers expressed their interest in the display after its release, revealed Ting. It will take two years for Innolux’s AM Mini LED technology to enter the auto market and hit mass production. However, following that Innolux will be granted five long years during which it can provide automakers with its offerings.
Innolux sees great potential in the automotive electronics space and expects to commercialize its AM Mini LED-based products after two years, added Ting. It will also carry on other projects in hope to announce new breakthroughs in June.
