Samsung Supplies Apple OLED Screens and Touch Bar

News Source:

Samsung is supplying more than just OLED screens for iPhones to Apple, reported Korea ETNews.

The Korean electronic manufacturer specializing in small to mid-sized OLED panels is also providing the needed component in OLED Touch Bar panels and new MacBook Pro.

An industry source told the Korean media, Apple is using Samsung Display OLED panels in touch screen bars for the brand new MacBook Pro, which is a rigid type of OLED panel manufactured at Samsung Display’s A2 Line.

“Apple is currently looking into ways of using OLED panels for MacBooks and testing their performance.” said a different representative.

The report noted Dell, HP, Samsung and Lenovo all preferred launching OLED display laptops this year over LCDs. However, the OLED laptops on the market have been unable to make the most of the new display technology and consuming even more energy than their LCD counterparts because it is frequently switched to white screen modes rather than dark screens.

Apple is only using OLED panels for its touch in OLED screens because of its Back-Light Unit (BLU) is three times thinner than LCDs, said an industry representative. Moreover, Apple tends to offer a black screen MacBook as its standard model.

The Cupertino company’s switch to OLED panel technology is estimated to have little impact on Samsung Display sales, said an industry representative. However, it is projected LG Display which focuses on high-resolution LTPS (Low-Temperature Poly-Silicon) LCDs will be affected by Apple’s panel swap.
