Who Needs Screen Displays with Ritot's LED Smart Watch?

Wearable devices are still in its early phases, where manufacturers can be creative in design. Ritot, a Ukraine-based startup has abandoned screen designs, who needs a LED or OLED screen displays if all the information you need can be projected onto your wrist?

Be warned, though, the company currently does not have a workable prototype, so all images advertising the smart watch on Indiegogo are nothing more than 3D rendered images of the final product. Nonetheless, the implications of the proposed smart watch design could go far.

Current smart watch designs tend to stick to screen display designs, whether it’s incorporating a LED-backlit touch screen or more advanced OLED screen. Samsung’s smart watch has gone from the bulky square shaped Gear to a slimmer sushi shaped version using flexible OLED screen display. The much anticipated Apple smart watch is rumored to be implementing OLED screen so it could wrap around the wrist to fit, other rumors include using robust sapphire to keep the screen scratch resistant.

So here’s where Ritot’s LED projection design could potentially become a game changer in the smart watch industry. LED projection could save manufacturers the trouble of investing millions of dollars into developing flexible screen materials and protective glass covers. Even LEDs for screen backlight will be cut from production costs. Furthermore, by slashing the screen design, the device is lighter and can be more aesthetically shaped.

All hands up. Different people showing different Ritot models.

According to the company’s Indiegogo campaign, the LED projector smart watch uses DLPC300 –controller of the DLP matrix in the projector to control the images projected by the LEDs. All info is projected onto the wrist for a brief 10 seconds before fading away. The watch is capable of changing into 20 colors, and uses Bluetooth controllers. It can display the time, incoming calls, social media updates, and even fitness tracking. Additionally, it also goes a step further than the rumored two-sized iWatch in offering three models in four wrist sizes. The watches are available in bracelet models, sport models, and a very colorful plastic version.

It would be interesting to see if Ritot’s proposed LED projected smart watch takes off after initial production in late December this year, and whether it delivers all the features mentioned. The watch has so far successfully acquired US $1.06 million funding support on Indiegogo.
