OPTILED ramps up commitment to Hong Kong environment with green campaign

OPTILED sets example for the industry by encouraging the public in Hong Kong to switch to greener lighting technologies

OPTILED Lighting International, a pioneer of LED lighting technologies, launched its green L.E.D. campaign today. Short for Love the earth, Engage with LED lighting, Dump the conventional bulb, L.E.D. is a movement that will encourage people in Hong Kong to go green by taking the simple action of replacing one conventional bulb with an LED one.

As part of the campaign, OPTILED is partnering with green NGO Friends of the Earth (HK) as a silver sponsor of their hugely popular Tree Planting Challenge 2010. The challenge, which is a must-do event for local nature-lovers and environmentalists, makes a real impact on carbon reduction by planting thousands of new seedlings and raising awareness of the importance of carbon neutrality.

OPTILED will also encourage the adoption of more energy-efficient LED lighting by offering discounts on its flagship Super Star MR16 LED lamp during the campaign period -- from now until May 31, 2010. Moreover, during the promotion period, the company will donate HK$10 to Friends of the Earth for every purchase (one single receipt) of any of its lighting products in Hong Kong.

A key element of the L.E.D. campaign is public education. Many consumers are still unclear about the environmental benefits of LED lighting. To address this, OPTILED will launch a mini-site at http://yesgreen.optiled.com. This multimedia channel will be a rich source of information on how to implement green lighting practices at home and in the workplace and join OPTILED in pursuing other environmentally-friendly activities.

Additionally, OPTILED is holding a competition to encourage people to share their experiences of going green with LED lighting so as to promote wider adoption of this energy-efficient lighting technology. To enter, members of the public can upload a photo or video of an OPTILED lighting application to http://yesgreen.optiled.com and write a short description of the benefits they experienced by switching to LED lighting. The grand prize is a much-coveted team entry place at the Friends of the Earth (HK) Tree Planting Challenge 2010 and a gift box of OPTILED lighting products.

“For more than a decade, OPTILED has been firmly committed to promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly lighting practices,” said Peter Chan, managing director of OPTILED Lighting International. “With the L.E.D. campaign, we are really ramping up our efforts to champion LED lighting as a greener alternative. Through this campaign, we hope to set an example for the industry and spark a green lighting movement in Hong Kong homes and businesses.”

“Small actions add up to real results in the fight against climate change,” said Edwin Lau, Director of Friends of the Earth Hong Kong. “OPTILED is setting a great example by encouraging people to make one small step in their daily lives when trying to improve the energy efficiency of lighting – replacing incandescent bulbs or CFL with LED lighting. We appreciate OPTILED’s efforts and their support for our Tree Planting Challenge. We hope these events will inspire more Hong Kong people to take action against climate change by starting to make small steps towards sustainability in their homes and offices.”
