Hong Kong Highways Department Selects Telensa for Yuen Long Smart Street Lighting Pilot

Telensa, a connected street lighting and smart city applications provider, announced that it has been selected by the Highways Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) to deploy its PLANet intelligent street lighting system in a pilot programme led by engineering services group South King-Kum Shing JV to replace about 600 streetlights in Yuen Long Town with wirelessly managed LED lights.

Hong Kong to Upgrade Street Lighting to LED

Hong Kong will soon replace its street lights with more energy-efficient LED units, government officials confirmed. The competent authority, Honk Kong Highways Department, on Wednesday said due to mature LED technology and the significant drop in prices of LED light, the department agrees now is the right time to commence LED street lights replacement scheme. It added that replacement work has already started in the current financial year.

The Housing Authority in Hong Kong has scheduled to replace fluorescent lamps in the corridors of public housing estates with LED lighting. Several issues including the price, plus the fact it does not function properly in hot weather, and the repair problem need to be considered. Nano-Patterned Silicon Substrate Gives Higher Output than Micro-Patterned Silicon

Silicon is a lower cost raw material, and it has greater economies of scale in manufacturing than sapphire wafers most often used. Hong Kong University and Taiwan National Chiao Tung University researchers attempted to grow (380-450nm) indium gallium nitride LEDs on Silicon. The researchers previously developed micro-scale patterning using a silicon nitride (SiN) mask. Now they find Silicon also has a higher thermal conductivity which gives it better thermal control than sapphire.
