India’s Union ministry of urban development has requested the country’s state governments to fully replace to LED streetlights, an India Times report cited ELCOMA India saying.

The national initiative would be converting the country’s 27.5 million streetlights to LED and help the country slash more than 5,000 MW of electricity consumption over a period of three years.

The demand came after Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) released a streetlight survey, which concluded 80 percent of streetlights in India were dangerously installed. Factors including pole distance, type, and height of luminaire were not taken into consideration, indicating lighting was not the sole reason behind the streetlight replacement.

The Indian government has appointed Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to support financing and install the LED system in the country. The streetlights will be changed in a phase manner. EESL has begun working on specifications for suppliers’ qualified to ensure good quality LED streetlights.
