Microsemi Introduces New LED Driver for LCD TV Applications

Microsemi Corp. has introduced a revolutionary non-dissipative LED backlight driver called LX27901 for LCD TV applications.

The company has claimed it is the first device of its type to provide LED driving capabilities in TVs based on the LCD Integrated Power Supply (LIPS) architecture.

According to Amir Asvadi, vice president and general manager of the analog mixed signal group at Microsemi, "The LX27901 continues on our long tradition of innovation in high-performance display lighting solutions, delivering power-efficiency improvements in the 7 to 9 percent range. This impressive reduction in energy consumption, coupled with the ability to reduce component counts and bill-of-material costs, is driving growth for LIPS-based LCD TVs. With the LX27901, we are poised to capitalize on opportunities in this dynamic market segment."

Key features of the LED driver include three selectable drive modes, Microsemi's patented ACU_BRITE algorithm to provide high-accuracy, high-efficiency dimming over a wide operating range, synchronous regulation to reduce the number of power conversion stages and accurate current matching through the company's non-dissipative balancing technology.

Other features of the LX27901 are 0.8A source and sink drive capacity, on chip 5.25V regulator and direct connection to input voltage up to 27V. It also has user selectable dimming mode control, robust protection during abnormal open and short LED conditions and compensated external and internal PWM dimming operation. The device has dedicated fault indication and LED current and voltage monitoring. The LX27901 is also RoHS compliant and halogen free.

The LX27901 uses Microsemi's EcoBrite technology, combining the TV power supply and LED driver into a single efficient unit, eliminating the need for a DC-DC boost regulator.

It is offered in a plastic 16-pin small-outline integrated circuit (SOIC) surface mounted package.
