Takashi Sakamoto, Principal Technical Officer of Optoelectronics Products at Nichia, introduced three cutting-edge technologies of the company and their current updates and applications. For backlighting, the company developed the new LCD backlight product “Nichia Thin Side View (NTSV)” for mobile application to compete with OLED.

Nichia developed the ultra-high color rendering white LED “Optisolis” whose its spectrum is very similar to sunlight. Optisolis applies Nichias blue LED chips and the phosphor technology which helps to reduce light damage on objects and enhance eye comfort. Currently the company has built relationships with medical care institutions and will be shipping small amounts to clients in Europe and the U.S. The technology can also be applied to horticulture lighting as Nichia has set up a plant factory in Shanghai.

Automotive lighting LEDs is also one main focus for Nichia. In 2018, Nichia has released headlight LEDs with high technology such as Adaptive Driving beam LED and Daytime Running Light LED. The company is keen to develop high functioning LEDs for headlights with sensors and other applications. Sakamoto showcased the new “GigaWhite” LED which is extremely small and can be easily applied in headlight module to fit different designs. According to the company, the product is scheduled to enter the market by 2019.

Laser Diode (LD) is another key product for Nichia to create high revenue. The company is constructing a new factory in Japan for LD production implementing in headlight, endoscope and projector and plans to double the capacity of LD by 2020.
