Plessey to Showcase Micro LED AR/VR Glasses at CES 2019

Plessey, the UK-based optoelectronic technology solutions provider, announced that it is going to demonstrate AR and VR glasses powered by Micro LEDs at CES 2019. Plessey’s Micro LEDs are put in action for AR applications with Vuzix, who has collaborated with Plessy in the development of Micro LED smart glasses.

According to Plessey, its Micro LEDs offer 10 times the resolution, 100 times the contrast ratio, and up to 1,000 times the luminance compared to traditional OLEDs. Furthermore, the device uses only half the power consumption, doubling battery life in portable headsets. Plessey was named a CES 2019 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Embedded Technologies category with its monolithic Micro LED displays for the smart glasses. Visitors to the Plessey booth at CES 2019 will be the first to experience the next generation wearable devices.

Plessey has been preparing its monolithic Micro LED display based on GaN-on-Silicon since the beginning of 2018. By the second quarter of the year, the company announced its partnership with Vuzix to develop smart glasses deploying Micro LED technology. Later, Plessey began to work with Jasper Display for the silicon backplane and ordered Aixtron’s MOCVD equipment to boost its GaN-on-Si wafer production. Following the notice of the CES 2019 Innovation Award, Plessey’s Micro LED technology applied in AR and VR smart glasses will be displayed at the show.

Apart from the AR and VR glasses powered by Micro LED, Plessey is also showing a 0.7 inch 1080p Micro LED comprising separate red, green and blue panels, and an addressable blue 0.7 inch Micro LED display running 1080p video.

Mike Lee, President of Corporate and Business Development at Plessey, said, “We’re looking forward to previewing the amazing new AR, VR and head-up display experience that Micro LEDs are set to create at CES. Compared with all other display technologies, Micro LEDs are brighter, smaller, lighter, more energy-efficient, and have a longer operating life. As a world leader in Micro LED development, Plessey is helping its customers to be first to bring the technology to market in 2019.”
