Irish City Council to Upgrade to LED Streetlights

Kerry County Council in Ireland will be overhauling existing streetlights with LEDs to cut annual streetlight spending, reported The Kerryman.

The lighting upgrade is expected to help the city save more than EUR 1 million (US $) per year in streetlight spending, due to the lights long lifetimes.

This will drastically cutting its energy bill from the EUR 1.3 million last year, and it also spent EUR 600,000 last year on streetlight maintenance.

Initially, a pilot project seems to be scheduled where only a small number of new lights will be installed.

Streetlight upgrade plan will take measures to ensure that the International Dark Sky Reserve in south Kerry is maintained.

The reserve is one in nine zones in the northern hemisphere that has been recognized for the lack of light pollution and dark night skies.
