[News] Compact RGGB LED Optimized for Smart Glasses

News Source:

The future is right in front of our eyes: lighter, sleeker, and smarter than ever before. Smart glasses is no longer a distant vision; it is on the verge of becoming as natural to us as the smartphone is today. But turning this vision into reality requires more than just design concepts. With this in mind, ams OSRAM introduces VEGALED™ – its ultra compact RGGB optimized LED for LCoS & DMD projector applications and designed for micro-displays in smart glasses, pico projection and machine vision. This breakthrough combines exceptional temperature stability and color with high efficiency, enabling sleek, stylish, and truly wearable augmented reality experiences.

“VEGALED™ gives manufacturers the freedom to create smart glasses that lead in technology while meeting the lifestyle expectations of consumers,” says Karl Leahy, Marketing Director at ams OSRAM. “Our solution combines maximum efficiency with exceptional color rendering – a decisive step toward making smart glasses and augmented reality truly wearable.”

The applications demand display technology that delivers brilliant colors in an extremely compact format, operates efficiently, and enables wearable elegance. This is where the latest breakthrough comes in: VEGALED™ an ultra-compact RGGB (red, green, green, blue) LED developed specifically for micro-displays in smart glasses. It ensures life like skin tones, vivid textures, and virtual objects that appear so true to reality that the line between digital and physical begins to blur.

VEGALED™ combines four chips, red, green, green, blue, in a single package, achieving outstanding color mixing and uniform display performance. The four chips are also individually addressable, a key prerequisite for use with LCoS imagers. Its compact design is optimized for applications where every inch matters. High energy efficiency extends battery life and minimizes heat generation, allowing for slimmer, lighter designs without the need for additional active cooling. The result is smart glasses that are not only technologically advanced but also stylish and comfortable enough for everyday wear. ams OSRAM offers this multi color LED with footprint of 2,7 x 3,05mm2 very small chip to chip gaps, enabling more efficient system designs. The typical dominant wavelengths are 460nm, 525nm, and 615nm. VEGALED™ delivers typical values of red at 23 lumens, green at 70 lumens, and blue at 175 milliwatts – ensuring high brightness also by challenging outdoor environment.

With VEGALED™ ams OSRAM takes one decisive step further towards accelerating the transition to smart glasses. For manufacturers, it means unparalleled design flexibility and the ability to deliver products that merge innovation with style. For end users, it enables an entirely new experience – sleek, lightweight, and immersive.
