Since the first light bulb was invented in the 1800’s new lamp technology has evolved. When the fluorescent tube was invented in 1929, sales of traditional light bulbs plummeted, and then in the 1970’s along came the compact fluorescent, since then new variations have evolved, sales of the former types have virtually disappeared, but the fundamental lamp design has remained unchanged, using a heating element to ignite gases and produce light. The use of a heating element results in energy being wasted as heat as opposed to generating light.

The Wal-Mart Superstore, the first retail store to feature light-emitting diode (LED) parking lot site lighting, based on specifications developed by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Retailer Energy Alliance, will reopen on July 15, 2009, in Leavenworth, Kansas. The Coca-Cola Co.’s new 49-foot-tall Coca-Cola Contour bottle will be revealed at Turner Field on July 16, the beverage giant said. The new “21st Century” version of the previous bottle, which stood for 12 years, features a high-resolution, programmable LED screen that can produce millions of colors. The screen also serves as the iconic Coca-Cola label. The outside of the bottle is made of a polycarbonate high-impact material and traced in 3,000 tri-colored LEDs.

GM will use LED daytime running lights as a way to add visual distinction to its vehicles, according to a conversation Car and Driver’s Steve Siler had with Jim Federico, GM’s vehicle line executive for midsize cars like the Chevy Malibu and Cadillac CTS. The LEDs appear in the new Buick LaCrosse and give the headlamps an opportunity to distinguish GM products.
