Lexus of Albuquerque has selected Visible Light Solar Technologies, a solar/LED commercial lighting innovator, to retrofit its exterior lot lights at both its Albuquerque and Santa Fe dealerships following an initial pilot installation that yielded 82% energy savings. The solar/LED lights also gave the dealership true-color nighttime light quality, equal in clarity to daylight lighting, allowing for secure and effective afterhours customer browsing.

Samsung targets to sell at least 2 million LCD TVs with LED backlight in 2009 and at least 10 million units in 2010, according to a company executive. "We are aiming to sell at least 22 million (conventional) LCD television sets and at least 2 million LED televisions in 2009," said Yoon Boo-keun, president of Samsung's visual display division at a press conference ahead of IFA 2009 in Germany.

The US ARMY has ordered multiple airfield lighting systems from Avlite Systems Inc to be installed at four forward operating airfields in northern Iraq. This order fulfills a critical requirement to ensure the ongoing safety and maintenance of these airfields by replacing other airfield lighting systems that have reached end of life. The Army will be using the more than 875 solar powered LED airfield lights on runways, thresholds, taxiways, apron edge, obstructions and helipads.

FD LED, Toyo Ink's new series of environmentally friendly energy-curable sheetfed inks, spurred significant discussion about the future of offset printing when it was introduced at Drupa 2008. FD LED inks are hard-dried using ultraviolet rays produced by dedicated light emitting diodes (LEDs). They represent the next front in terms of providing productivity increases, enhanced print quality and excellent environmental performance.

The implementation of efficient, attractive LED street lighting in Portugal has gathered pace over the summer as EnergiaViva has completed installations of the new UrbanLED street light in ten towns and cities. Installation work in a further 20 Portuguese municipalities is expected to have been completed this fall.
