Darnell Group's first edition of "LED Driver ICs: Worldwide Forecasts" examines the projected growth path for solid-state lighting out to 2013. The forecasts are based on a detailed analysis of 53 application subsegments in small LED backlight units (BLUs) (<7"); medium LCD BLUs (7 to 15"); large LCD BLUs (>15"); automobiles; light trucks; commercial trucks and buses; signs, signals, and billboards; illumination; projection displays; and photographic lighting.

It's reported that Backlight unit (BLU) suppliers are gearing up their shipments of LED BLUs for notebook PCs, with makers' shipments for the segment expected to rise sharply in the second half of the year, according to company and market sources.Demand for LED backlighting in notebook applications has been rising fast, with LCD panel makers generally predicting a 20% penetration rate for LEDs in the notebook PC market by the end of this year.

It’s reported that Taiwan-based LED maker Wanstar Technology has announced the company will start shipping its newly developed LED street lights to a US-based lighting company and expects to complete 16,000 units before February of 2009. Wanstar's new LED street light features a heatsink cover, which can maintain the light's temperature at around 50-degrees Fahrenheit in an average environment temperature of 68-degrees Fahrenheit.

Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp (2409.TW), the world's third-largest LCD maker, said on Friday its board has approved a plan to set up a T$1.5 billion ($50 million) company making light emitting diode (LED) backlights for displays. The move aims to help the company secure supplies of LED backlights, a key component for thin liquid crystal displays, the company said in a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange. It gave no timetable or other details.

The total operating revenue of Taiwan LED companies this March hit $188 million, up 18.4 percent month-on-month compared to the prior month's $161 million and up 17.17 percent y-on-y. This is according to the latest statistics from LEDinside, a subsidiary division of DRAMeXchange Tech Inc.The total operating revenue of LED crystal grain manufacturers grew 15.31 percent over the last month. Operating revenues of LED-packaging manufactures climbed 20.89 percent from February's figures.

LCD panel makers are gearing up their development for the growing market trend of low-cost notebooks, with the makers planning new sizes and applications for the segment.AUO plans to adopt LED backlighting for all of its notebook panels by the end of 2011, in line with its goal to roll out lighter, thinner and more power-saving solutions. The maker will also give heavy emphasis to 16:9 notebook panels, according to Peng.

Oxford Instruments said it has acquired Technologies and Devices International Inc., which develops hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) technology and processes used to manufacture high-brightness light-emitting diode (LEDs), power ICs and other products. TDI also manufactures compound semiconductors based on gallium nitride and other "III-nitride" materials.The deal comes three months after the death of TDI founder Vladimir Dmitriev, who suffered a heart attack at age 52 in January, shortly after receiving a U.S. patent for HVPE technology.
