Philips files LED patent lawsuit against Lighting Science Group

The former Color Kinetics, now part of Philips,is alleging that its patents have been infringed by LED Effects, now part of Lighting Science Group Corporation (LSG). This could be an interesting contest: CK was founded and started filing patents in the LED lighting space in 1997. However, LED Effects has been designing, developing and selling custom-designed, pulse-with-modulation (PWM) controlled, color-changing LED fixtures and components since 1994.

According to Bo Jiansheng, general manager of Philips Taiwan lighting, the market scale of the Taiwan street light market that is being converted to LED lighting applications is expected to exceed NT$1 billion (US$32.46 million), and the company has already gained some installation contracts from local governments in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.

Mitsubishi Chemical acquiring near-UV LED business of Mitsubishi Cable

Mitsubishi Chemical Corp, a unit of Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corp, of Tokyo, Japan has agreed to acquire the near-ultraviolet LED business of Mitsubishi Cable Industries Ltd (including the facilities and the technology to produce the chips) at the end of March for ¥1.5bn (about $13.9m), reports Nikkei Net. The Mitsubishi Cable near-UV LED manufacturing operations in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture will be moved to Mitsubishi Chemical’s facilities in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture.
