According to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN),Taiwan PC case maker Casing Macron Technology has entered into the LED ODM industry.Casing Macron Technology received LED street lamp ODM orders from China Aerospace Science and Technology (CASC) and Hutchison Whampoa (HWL) for the China Guangshen highway project, and the paper estimates the revenue contribution from the projects will add NT$2-3 billion (US$65-98 million) to Casing Macron Technology 's annual revenues.

June 19, 2008... Osram Opto Semiconductors Asia Ltd. (Osram) reported the formation of a new partnership with Shenzhen SED Industry Co., Ltd. to launch an LED street lamp project in Mainland China. The project will use Osram's Golden Dragon LED light engine with lens to produce what the Osram says will be a landmark product in the evolution of street lighting. According to Osram, the lamps will be first installed along one of the roads in Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park.

A research team at Saga University in Saga, Japan, has created a new green LED that the researchers contend is only a fraction of the cost, but can be as energy efficient, according to an article in Nikkei Net. Instead of using the more expensive molecular beam epitaxy, the researchers used what the article called thermal diffusion. Missouri City is about to begin a pilot study that involves using more energy efficient, improved streetlights throughout neighborhoods in the city. City council authorized the study with CenterPoint Energy during this week's regular meeting. The city will be looking at replacing existing incandescent streetlights with light emitting diodes, commonly known as LEDs.
